ITS Campus, ITS News – In order to help improve the economy of salt farmers in Indonesia, three students of Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) who are members of the Sehat Team managed to produce innovative work. Through Garam.id, which is a salt buying and selling application, it can make the results of domestic salt production perfectly absorbed, as well as provide education to salt farmers to be able to produce salt according to industrial quality.
The three are Berliana Nur Indah Sari, Dian Permana, and Dendi Bahranur Aulia, who are the figures behind the innovation of the Garam.id application. With the guidance of Dr. Dhany Arifianto ST MEng, the Sehat Team managed to score a victory by winning a silver medal at the XIV National Student Show for Technology, Information and Communication (Gemastik) in the Software Development (PPL) branch of the competition.
Berliana Nur Indah Sari, as the team leader, revealed that Garam.id aims to educate farmers so that they can improve the quality of their salt. This application has a supporting feature that can identify the type of salt. “In addition, Garam.id also provides articles and literature on the quality of national salt,” she said.
In addition, continued Berliana, salt farmers can also anticipate crop failures through the features of climate and weather forecasts. Because Garam.id can connect farmers with companies or industries directly, this means they no longer need to sell to intermediaries at low prices. “With Garam.id, salt farmers can sell salt directly to the industry,” said the student from the Engineering Physics Department.
The idea came from the problems of salt farmers in Berliana’s hometown in Sumenep, Madura. Therefore, the Sehat Team focuses on helping salt farmers so that the salt production that will be sold is by industrial quality through the development of the Garam.id application.
To provide maximum assistance, the team conducted direct interviews with salt farmers to finalize the application’s purpose. In addition, the team also read literature on the types of salt that salt farmers can produce.
According to Berliana, in working on this application, his team had problems developing the application’s features. This is because the development of features in this application must be adapted to field conditions to provide the desired convenience. The Sehat Team received assistance from many parties, such as support from ITS Information Technology Department lecturers to perfect the making of applications.
It doesn’t stop here; the Sehat Team plans the Garam.id application to be a stepping stone for salt farmers in Indonesia. They plan to cooperate with local governments and salt farmers’ associations. Then, they can continue to cooperate with the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) and the Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT).
Berliana and her team hope that this application will increase Indonesia’s inclusive and sustainable economic growth. In addition, Garam.id is also expected to help salt farmers in Indonesia cooperate with the government and the production industry. “Hopefully, we can implement this application to help salt farmers,” said Berliana hopefully.
