Surabaya, ITS News — Becoming the axis of marine technology development in East Java and even Indonesia, Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) successfully achieved an award as the Pioneer of Human Resource Development and Maritime Technology Innovation. The award was given by Jawa Pos Media Televisi or JTV during the peak award event of the East Java Maritime Awards 2026, Wednesday (20/5) night.

The award was given as an appreciation for institutions and driving figures of the maritime sector in East Java (Jatim). The appreciation night simultaneously became an acknowledgment of ITS’s symmetrical role as a maritime technology command in supporting existing marine potentials.

ITS Vice Rector III for Human Resources, Organization, (SDMO) and Information System Technology (TSI) Imam Baihaqi ST MSc PhD attended in person to receive the gold award. With the appreciation given, Imam stated that ITS has committed to contributing to producing superior Human Resources (HR) capable of developing marine potentials that play a crucial role in the Indonesian economy.

The ITS Business Management Department lecturer argued that Indonesia, as an archipelagic country surrounded by its vast seascape, cannot be separated from abundant marine resources. “Therefore, the existing maritime wealth needs to be managed optimally, which can start from advanced sea transportation technology and logistics activities,” Imam explained.

As proof, Fakultas Teknologi Kelautan (FTK) ITS has long produced various innovations that support the advancement of the maritime economy in Indonesia, especially in the East Java region. Several developments in marine and shipbuilding technology, such as i-Stow, eco-friendly underwater LED lights for fishermen (Lamusa), to artificial coastal protection structures that support coral reefs (Hexareef), have been nationally recognized.

Furthermore, the ITS Industrial Engineering alumnus stated that the recognition obtained this time will be used as a drive for the Hero Campus to continue innovating. “This becomes our main spur (ITS), that until today there is still much homework (PR) that ITS needs to develop to advance the economy of marine workers,” he said.

Dean of FTK ITS Dr Ing Ir Setyo Nugroho emphasized that through the achieved award, ITS will take a dominant role to ensure domestic innovation products can be absorbed optimally. “This will be our encouragement in supporting the advancement of marine technology until we are ready to conquer the ocean with innovation,” said the lecturer who is familiarly called Yoyok.

This event also coincides with the commemoration of National Awakening Day and becomes a momentum for Indonesia’s maritime awakening. Imam hopes that ITS will be able to commit more deeply to providing an impact on society. Both in producing competent HR in various fields, as well as technological breakthroughs for the nation’s progress.

The contribution and commitment provided by ITS are efforts in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Indonesia. Starting from the achievement goal on point 8 regarding Decent Work and Economic Growth, point 9 regarding Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, as well as point 14 regarding Marine Ecosystems.
