Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology
ITS Campus, ITS News — After being officially opened, Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) socialized its new study program (Prodi), namely Mining Engineering, online, Thursday (6/26). The study program under the Faculty of Civil, Planning, and Geotechnical Engineering (FTSPK) ITS is opening registration for new students in 2025 for the first time through the 2nd wave of Independent Selection.
Dean of FTSPK ITS Prof. Adjie Pamungkas ST MDev Plg PhD explained that the ITS Mining Engineering Study Program is designed to produce graduates who are able to answer the challenges of mineral resource exploration. Students will study feasibility studies, processing, and mine closure. “Not only that, students will also study geotechnics, geophysics, geology, and materials,” he explained.
On the same occasion, Head of the ITS Mining Engineering Study Program Akbar Kurniawan ST MT added that the national graduation rate in this field is still inadequate to meet industry needs. According to his research, there are only 4,700 Mining Engineering graduates each year, even though this sector needs up to 9 million workers by 2040. “This means that we still lack around 74 percent of the workforce in this field,” he explained.

Head of the ITS Mining Engineering Study Program, Akbar Kurniawan ST MT, while explaining the curriculum structure of the ITS Mining Engineering Study Program onlineAkbar emphasized that the increasingly complex needs of the industry demand a greater role from Mining Engineering graduates. They are not only presented to meet the demand for workers, but to appear as figures who have strategic roles. The curriculum of this study program targets graduates to become reliable operational leaders in the field and innovators who create breakthroughs in environmentally friendly mining systems.
Meanwhile, Head of ITS Admission and Promotion Subdirectorate Nani Kurniati ST MT PhD explained the registration mechanism for new students of the ITS Mining Engineering Study Program. For this year, Nani continued, registration for new students is only through the ITS Independent Selection (SMITS) Academic Competence Excellence (ACE) wave 2. “This is because the study program has just been opened,” she said.

Furthermore, Nani said that the selection process in this pathway does not only focus on academic grades alone, but also considers the potential of participants as a whole. The assessment is based on the results of the Computer-Based Written Exam (UTBK) and/or SMITS Test, academic and non-academic achievements, and report card grades, especially in supporting subjects for the study program. “For the Mining Engineering Study Program, the relevant subject is Physics,” added Nani.
ITS’s efforts in opening the Mining Engineering Study Program are in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) , especially point 4 on quality education and point 9 on industry, innovation, and infrastructure. Through an adaptive curriculum, ITS is committed to producing superior graduates who are able to answer the challenges of the mining sector in an innovative and sustainable manner.
This new study program is expected to produce quality human resources for the mining industry to support Indonesia’s progress. Prospective students interested in this study program can register through the ITS Independent Selection pathway at the link www.its.ac.id/admission/ before the deadline on June 30, 2025.
