In order to improve the quality of case studies teaching, the Department of  Technology Management Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (MMT ITS) held an annually workshop entitled Teaching Post Experience Student. This activity was held online tutored by Prof. Saibal Ray from McGill University Canada twice on Fridays (6/19 and 6/26).

In his remarks, Dean of the Faculty of Creative Design and Digital Business (FDKBD), Imam Baihaqi ST MSc PhD said that the teaching workshop was aimed at giving an explanation to MMT lecturers about teaching strategies using case studies. “This workshop is very important for MMT lecturers to get students closer to real problems and provide an understanding of how the theory can be implemented,” he said.

On the same occasion, the Head of the Department of Technology Management, Prof. Ir. I Nyoman Pujawan, M.Eng., Ph.D., also said that this workshop was held annually by his department. Some expert professors from renowned business schools had been a speaker in the previous workshops. “Starting from the National University of Singapore, the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) Australia, and this year from McGill University Canada,” he explained when interviewed by ITS Online.

According to Nyoman, his familiar greeting, this teaching workshop is expected to help the MMT ITS’s lecturers become more accustomed to using case studies in the teaching and learning process, something that familiar for other management schools abroad. It is hoped that there will be a significant change in the teaching and learning process starting next semester. “We will facilitate lecturers who need case studies, MMT students can also receive positive benefits if this process goes well,” he said.

In addition, Nyoman said that teaching regular students with MMT students had different challenges. The areas taught are more focused on the management aspects, while those who teach are the majority of lecturers with technical or scientific backgrounds so different approaches are needed. “One of them common in the teaching and learning process in management schools is the use of case studies as taught in this workshop,” he added.

Furthermore, Imam Baihaqi also supports the statement, according to him the MMT program has its own uniqueness. Most of the students are professionals who have worked but still want to improve their competence. There needs to be an appropriate mix of theory and practice when teaching in MMT classes. “For this reason, MMT always holds workshops, because we have committed to give the best to students,” he explained.

Finally, Imam Baihaqi hopes that the case study-based learning method can improve students’ critical thinking skills. “This is in accordance with the principles of teaching in MMT namely learn how to think and learn how to learn so that students are able to adapt to all changes that exist,” he concluded.  (Source: ITS News (sin/lut))
