Academic Background
Wahyu Prasetyo Utomo is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry, Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS), Surabaya, Indonesia. He earned his bachelor’s degree in chemistry from ITS in 2012 under the supervision of Dr. Afifah Rosyidah. Through the Fast Track program, he began his master’s studies during his undergraduate years in 2011 and completed the degree in 2014 under the supervision of Prof. Hamzah Fansuri.
In October 2023, he completed his Ph.D. at the School of Energy and Environment (SEE), City University of Hong Kong, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Yun Hau Ng and Dr. Hao Wu (Macao University of Science and Technology). Throughout his academic journey, he has actively participated in numerous international workshops and research activities, including X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy training at SLRI, Thailand.
Research Interests
Wahyu’s research lies at the intersection of inorganic chemistry, nanomaterials, and catalysis, focusing on both fundamental studies and real-world applications in the fields of energy and environment. His current research interests include:
Nanoparticle Synthesis
Thin Films and Heterostructures for: 1) Electrocatalytic and Photocatalytic Ammonia Synthesis from nitrate, nitrogen, and other sources 2) Hydrogen Production via water splitting 3) CO₂ Reduction into value-added products 4) Photodegradation of Organic Pollutants
Metal Extraction from minerals and mining waste (tailings)

In 2022, he received the Best Oral Presenter Award at the International Conference on Environmental Systems Engineering and Technology (ICESET) organized by UPN Veteran Jawa Timur.

Wahyu currently serves as:

Research Focus: Nanoparticle Synthesis, Heterostructured Materials, and Catalysis for Energy and Environmental Applications
Our research group is dedicated to the design and development of advanced functional materials—ranging from nanoparticles to thin films and heterostructures—for sustainable energy conversion and environmental remediation.
We explore these materials from fundamental aspects, such as synthesis strategies, structural engineering, and reaction mechanisms, to applied dimensions, including performance enhancement in real-world catalytic systems.
