Department of Chemistry and PMP2KP Surabaya Have Established a Collaboration to Strengthen Research and Talent Development in Marine and Fisheries Sector

The Department of Chemistry at Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) has expanded its strategic collaboration with regional government institutions through a newly signed cooperation agreement with the Quality Testing and Product Development Unit for Marine and Fisheries (PMP2KP) in Surabaya. The partnership marks an important step toward enhancing research quality, strengthening human resource development, and boosting the university’s contribution to the marine and fisheries sector in East Java.

More than a formal document, the agreement reflects a shared commitment to creating practical, science-based solutions. The collaboration includes internship and industrial placement opportunities for students, as well as access to real-world problems at PMP2KP that can serve as topics for undergraduate and graduate research projects.

Wahyu P Utomo PhD, Head of Departement of Chemistry ITS, emphasized the value of this opportunity for students seeking hands-on experience. “PMP2KP can accept between five and twelve interns every month. This opens wider access for students to learn directly from the field and contribute meaningful solutions,” he said.

The partnership also brings benefits to PMP2KP, particularly through capacity-building programs and technical training for staff, delivered by experts from the ITS Department of Chemistry. These programs are expected to enhance the unit’s analytical capabilities and support the development of high-quality marine and fisheries products that meet industry standards.

The agreement exemplifies how collaboration between academia and government institutions can create wider social and economic impact. Beyond improving graduate competencies, the partnership also aligns with several Sustainable Development Goals, including SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), and SDG 14 (Life Below Water).

Through this joint initiative, ITS and PMP2KP reaffirm their commitment to ensuring that scientific knowledge extends beyond classrooms—directly addressing the needs of communities and industries. (r_i)
