Balikpapan, IT Journalistic — As part of a series of activities in Balikpapan, the team from the Department of Information Technology at Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (DTI ITS) carried out an educational visit to the Pertamina Balikpapan Refinery on Monday (October 20, 2025).This activity aimed to broaden participants’ insights into national energy management and provide first-hand understanding of oil and energy industry processes in Indonesia.
Representing ITS in this visit were Dr. techn. Ir. Raden Venantius Hari Ginardi, M.Sc. (Head of the Information Technology Department), Ir. Muchammad Husni, M.Kom., Dr. Ir. Henning Titi Ciptaningtyas, S.Kom., M.Kom., Hatma Suryotrisongko, S.Kom., M.Eng., Ph.D., Ridho Rahman Hariadi, S.Kom., M.Sc., and Irzal Ahmad Sabilla, S.Kom., M.Kom.
The DTI ITS team was warmly welcomed by Mr. Sabar P. Simatupang, S.T., Vice President of Construction Balikpapan at PT Kilang Pertamina Balikpapan, who is also an alumnus of Mechanical Engineering, Universitas Indonesia. He personally led the tour around the refinery facility.
Singing of Indonesia Raya at 10:00 WITA
The visit began with the singing of Indonesia Raya at exactly 10:00 WITA as a gesture of respect for national values and patriotism. This solemn moment served as a meaningful opening before proceeding to the field tour session.

The visit continued with a guided tour around the refinery area, where the DTI team was introduced to the oil refining process, operational safety systems, and the key infrastructures used by Pertamina in managing energy production in Balikpapan.
During the session, Mr. Sabar P. Simatupang, S.T., delivered a strategic explanation regarding the Pertamina Balikpapan Refinery Development Project, covering its construction phases, production capacity expansion, and technological innovations implemented to strengthen national energy resilience. “Pertamina continuously strives to maintain operational efficiency and sustainability. Collaboration with educational institutions like ITS plays a crucial role in strengthening research and technological innovation in the energy sector,” explained Mr. Sabar.
In addition to technical aspects, he also shared managerial insights about the challenges of handling large-scale projects, as well as strategies for managing human resources and technology—key factors in the successful development of Indonesia’s energy industry.
This visit provided the DTI team with first-hand experience of best practices in the energy industry. Furthermore, it is expected to open opportunities for collaboration in research, technological innovation, and human resource development between ITS and PT Kilang Pertamina Balikpapan.
“Activities like this enrich the perspective of academics in understanding real industrial needs. We hope this synergy will continue to grow and contribute to national development in the energy sector,” said Dr. techn. Ir. Raden Venantius Hari Ginardi, M.Sc., Head of the Information Technology Department at ITS.
This activity also supports the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 7 – Affordable and Clean Energy) and SDG 9 – Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, emphasizing the importance of synergy between academia and industry in creating sustainable innovation.
