The ITS Department of Information Technology team delivering an explanation about the IoT-based emergency alert application during the 2025 Community Service (Abmas) program
Surabaya, IT Journalistic — The Department of Information Technology (DTI) at Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) once again demonstrates its commitment to delivering technological innovations that provide direct benefits to society. Through the 2025 Community Service Program (Abmas), DTI ITS introduced an Internet of Things (IoT)-based emergency alert system application to the residents of RW 12 Bhaskara Tengah, Surabaya. This program was designed to enhance security and accelerate residents’ responses to emergency situations.
Vice Head of RW 12 Bhaskara, Mr. Alwi Ibrahim, explained that the idea for the application was born from the community’s real experiences. “We once experienced a case of motorbike theft. From that, the idea arose together with ITS lecturers to design an emergency application. This truly came from the residents’ needs and has become a solution that can be directly applied,” he stated.
Head of RT 28 Bhaskara Tengah, Mrs. Ana, also expressed her appreciation for the program, emphasizing its practical benefits for the community in facing daily emergencies. “The benefit is that it allows us to act immediately when there is an emergency. With this system, residents can quickly notify others so the situation can be handled promptly,” she said.

More than just an alert system, this Abmas program is also expected to become a stepping stone toward establishing a smart community in the Bhaskara area. Mrs. Ana expressed her hope that the application will continue to develop with more comprehensive digital features to support neighborhood management. Meanwhile, Mr. Alwi emphasized the importance of continuous updates so that the application will not become outdated and will remain relevant to community needs in the future.
Through this initiative, ITS once again reaffirms its motto “grounded locally, impactful globally” by presenting technological innovations that address local needs while reflecting global contributions. This program is also aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Sustainable Cities and Communities, as it strengthens community safety and resilience through digital innovation.
