The team from the Department of Information Technology (DTI) ITS poses with the leadership and staff of Balikpapan Botanical Garden in front of the UPTD Balikpapan Botanical Garden office.
Balikpapan, IT Journalistic — As part of a series of activities in Balikpapan City, a team from the Department of Information Technology, Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (DTI ITS), together with representatives from Institut Teknologi Kalimantan (ITK), conducted a collaborative visit to the Balikpapan Botanical Garden on Saturday (18 October 2025).
This visit was also attended by several lecturers from the ITS Department of Information Technology, including Dr.techn. Ir. Raden Venantius Hari Ginardi, M.Sc.; Ir. Muchammad Husni, M.Kom.; Ir. Khakim Ghozali, M.MT.; Hatma Suryotrisongko, S.Kom., M.Eng., Ph.D.; Annisaa Sri Indrawanti, S.Kom., M.Kom.; Dr. Rizka Wakhidatus Sholikah, S.Kom.; and Irzal Ahmad Sabilla, S.Kom., M.Kom.
In addition to representing DTI ITS, the presence of Ir. Khakim Ghozali, M.MT., as Vice Rector of Institut Teknologi Kalimantan (ITK), symbolized the importance of inter-institutional collaboration in advancing technological development in East Kalimantan.
From the Balikpapan Botanical Garden, the activity was supported by staff who attended and accompanied the event, including Hairudin; Yuwono, A.Md.; Akmal Marup, S.Kom.; Ramlani; Sofhia Ramadhani; Sari Wulandari; Novi Ariayati, S.E.; Murni Jati, A.Md.; and Ega Ratriyaski.
The program began with remarks from Ir. Khakim Ghozali, M.MT., Vice Rector of Institut Teknologi Kalimantan, who emphasized the importance of institutional collaboration to support the modernization of environmental education in Indonesia. The next speech was delivered by Dr.techn. Ir. Raden Venantius Hari Ginardi, M.Sc., Head of the ITS Department of Information Technology, who expressed hopes that the collaboration between ITS and ITK would deliver sustainable digital solutions for conservation institutions. The opening ceremony concluded with remarks from the Head of UPTD Balikpapan Botanical Garden, Mr. Lukman Riyadi, S.T., who welcomed and appreciated the development of this digital platform.
After the opening, the ITS–ITK team presented their first product, the Balikpapan Botanical Garden virtual tour webapp, a web-based platform that allows visitors to explore the botanical garden through 360-degree visuals. The webapp is equipped with information on facilities, plant collections, conservation zones, and other key points. This feature is designed to help visitors understand the botanical garden comprehensively, even before visiting in person.

The second product presented was an educational mobile application equipped with Augmented Reality (AR), interactive quizzes, and a flora encyclopedia. The application is directly integrated with the virtual tour webapp to provide an even more complete learning experience. Through the combination of visual technology, scientific information, and interactive navigation, this application is expected to serve as a modern learning tool for students, university learners, and the general public.
During the discussion session, the ITS and ITK team proposed several future development plans, such as adding more visual assets on biodiversity, increasing information detail at virtual tour points, and providing contact features and location navigation to help visitors find specific areas through the app. The Balikpapan Botanical Garden team responded enthusiastically, noting that these developments align with their vision of becoming a more informative, modern, and education-friendly botanical garden.

The botanical garden representatives stated that the digitalization initiative aims not only to support visitors but also to strengthen the role of Balikpapan Botanical Garden as a center for environmental education. With the digital platform developed by ITS and ITK, students can better understand conservation-related information in a more engaging and accessible way.
To close the event, Dr.techn. Ir. Raden Venantius Hari Ginardi, M.Sc. stated that this form of collaboration is a crucial step in bringing sustainable innovation to environmental education. He hopes that the partnership between ITS, ITK, and Balikpapan Botanical Garden will continue through research, technological innovation, and sustainable human resource development.
This collaborative activity also supports commitments to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), and SDG 15 (Life on Land), through enhanced technology-based environmental education.
