ITS and ITK Collaborate to Hold Training on Enhancing AI-Based Learning at Al Izzah Islamic Boarding School Balikpapan

Balikpapan, IT Journalistic — The Department of Information Technology, Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS), in collaboration with Institut Teknologi Kalimantan (ITK), held a Community Service (Abmas) program entitled “AI-Based Learning Enhancement Training for Teachers and Students of SMK Cendekia Al Izzah Balikpapan.”

The two-day event, conducted on Friday–Saturday (October 17–18, 2025), was attended by teachers and students at the ITK Computer Laboratory. This program represents a collaboration between two leading technological institutions aimed at introducing and optimizing the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based technology in creative, efficient, and adaptive learning activities that align with current technological developments.

The opening ceremony was held in the auditorium of Al Izzah Islamic Boarding School Balikpapan. In his opening remarks, KH. Muhammad Muhlasin, Head of Al Izzah Islamic Boarding School, expressed his gratitude for the realization of this event and emphasized the importance of continuously implementing Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education. “We sincerely welcome ITS and ITK for sharing their knowledge and experience with our teachers and students. This is an important step toward delivering more modern and relevant learning,” he stated.

Meanwhile, Hasan Asyari, S.E., Head of SMK Cendekia Al Izzah Balikpapan, said that this training serves as an important momentum to enhance the quality of teaching at the school. “Through this training, teachers can leverage AI-based technology to improve creativity and teaching effectiveness,” he explained.

Representing the higher education institutions, Dr. techn. Ir. Raden Venantius Hari Ginardi, M.Sc., Head of the ITS Department of Information Technology, emphasized that this Abmas activity reflects the real implementation of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education in the field of community service. “Teachers are the frontliners of education. Through this training, we hope they can integrate AI technology productively into the learning process,” he stated.

Also delivering remarks, Ir. Khakim Ghozali, M.MT., Vice Rector for Planning, Finance, and General Affairs at ITK, highlighted the importance of collaboration among higher education institutions. “Activities like this serve as a concrete step in strengthening the education and research ecosystem between ITS and ITK, while also providing direct benefits to the community in East Kalimantan,” he said.

During the training sessions, participants learned how to use ChatGPT to assist in developing teaching materials, Wayground for creating interactive learning simulations, and WordWall as a platform for quizzes and educational games. For students, additional sessions on Duolingo and Grammarly were provided to enhance language skills with AI assistance. One participating teacher shared a positive impression after completing the training: “This training has broadened our perspective on how technology can support the learning process. The materials were delivered clearly and can be directly applied,” they said.

At the end of the event, all participants completed an evaluation survey and received a digital learning module as a follow-up resource for their schools. This program serves as a strategic step to strengthen the capacity of teachers and students in applying AI-based technology to support adaptive and innovative learning.
