Surabaya, ITS News – The increasingly rapid development of digital technology encourages universities to continue producing innovations capable of answering various challenges in society. This is also a focus in the National Student Exhibition in Information and Communication Technology (GEMASTIK) which serves as a platform for Indonesian students to develop their creativity and competence in the field of information and communication technology.

In order to support the development of student innovation through GEMASTIK, a number of academics were present to discuss the potential of developing digital technology to provide solutions to community needs. The activity was attended by Ridho Rahman Hariadi, S.Kom., M.Sc., Irzal Ahmad Sabilla, S.Kom., M.Kom., Fuad Dary Rosyadi, S.Kom., M.Kom., Taufiq Choirul Amri, S.Tr.T., M.Kom., Gagatsatya Adiatmaja, S.T., M.Kom., and Anas Machfudy Al Junaedi, S.T., M.T., M.Sc.

GEMASTIK is not only a competition for students but also a space to encourage the emergence of technology-based ideas and solutions that have a real impact. Various fields developed in GEMASTIK can be a means for students to hone their skills in programming, artificial intelligence, data analysis, cyber security, and the development of digital solutions oriented towards community needs.

One of the concerns conveyed by Irzal Ahmad Sabilla, S.Kom., M.Kom. is the importance of directing student innovations so that they do not stop at mere application development, but are capable of answering real problems faced by the community and local governments, especially in the field of smart cities.

“The hope is that innovations born from GEMASTIK will not just stop as prototypes or applications for competitions. The technology needs to be directed to answer real problems in the city, for example through the utilization of data, artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, and integrated information systems to support decision-making, as well as having an impact on the wider community,” said Irzal.

He added that the development of a smart city requires an interconnected technological ecosystem. Data from various sectors, such as transportation, health, education, the environment, and public services, needs to be utilized in an integrated manner so that technology truly provides benefits to the community.

“A smart city is not just about making the city more modern, but how technology can make public services more effective, decisions more data-driven, and allow the community to benefit directly. It is time for us to win gold again, to reclaim the medal that rightfully belongs to all of us,” he continued.

This spirit is in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure through the development of technology and digital innovation that supports infrastructure development and a sustainable innovation ecosystem. The development of smart city solutions is also correlated with SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, especially in encouraging the creation of inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable cities through the use of technology.
