Surabaya, IT Journalistic — The SMAN 5 Surabaya Alumni Association (Ikasmanca), in collaboration with the Department of Information Technology, Faculty of Electrical and Intelligent Information Technology (FTEIC) at the Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS), has organized a community service program titled “Practical Training on the Use of AI Tools for Teachers: Enhancing Learning Effectiveness and Creativity.” The event was held from Thursday to Friday (September 25–26, 2025) and was attended by 55 teachers across 15 subjects from SMAN 5 Surabaya.

This training extends beyond the initial workshop, with intensive follow-up mentoring scheduled for two weeks, from September 27 to October 10, 2025. This mentoring aims to ensure that teachers can sustainably implement Artificial Intelligence (AI) in their teaching practices.

The event began with opening remarks from Sukirin Wikanto, the Principal of SMAN 5 Surabaya, who expressed his appreciation for the support from the alumni and ITS. “This training is immensely helpful for our teachers in adapting to the advancements in AI. The presence of alumni who are now contributing at ITS is a tangible form of service to their alma mater and the community,” he said.

This was followed by remarks from Adi Dharma, representing the Chairman of Ikasmanca. According to him, this collaborative program is an inaugural step for the new Ikasmanca board. “This is a form of tangible collaboration in line with Ikasmanca’s motto: communal, dignified, and beneficial. We hope this activity can support SMAN 5 teachers in becoming more effective and creative in delivering education,” stated the alumnus from the class of 1996.

Also delivering remarks was the Dean of FTEIC ITS, Prof. Dr. Diana Purwitasari, S.Kom., M.Sc., who emphasized that this activity embodies the Three Pillars of Higher Education (Tridharma Perguruan Tinggi). “ITS has strengths in technology, one of which is AI. Through this training, we aim to equip teachers to integrate pedagogy with AI, making learning richer and more relevant to the digital era,” said the Smala alumna from the class of 1996.

Afterward, Dr. R.V. Hari Ginardi, Head of the ITS Information Technology Department, presented a partnership certificate as a symbol of ongoing collaboration. He also affirmed that the program aligns with the “impactful campus” concept. “Teachers are the spearhead of education. By strengthening their competence, the impact is felt not only by the school but also by the wider community,” he explained.

Following the opening sessions, participants were introduced to SENOPATI, an open-source chatbot developed by lecturers and students of FTEIC ITS. This material was presented by Dwi Sunaryono, a lecturer from the ITS Informatics Engineering Department. “SENOPATI is designed as a digital assistant that can be freely used by both teachers and students. We hope this chatbot becomes a safe and independent alternative, while also proving that universities can deliver technological solutions that directly benefit the education sector,” he explained.

During the main session, teachers were introduced to the use of ChatGPT for developing teaching materials, Wayground for learning interactions, and WordWall as an interactive medium. All participants also received e-certificates, written modules, and video tutorials to revisit the materials after the event.

In the discussion session, a teacher raised a question about data security.
“When we interact with AI and upload personal documents, what if a data breach occurs? Is our data secure, and how can we mitigate this?” she asked.

Responding to the concern, Hazwan, a student from the ITS Information Technology Department class of 2023 and one of the speakers, provided an explanation. “Generally, data uploaded to commercial AI platforms may be stored on the provider’s servers. Therefore, it is advisable for teachers not to input highly sensitive information. Alternatives include using official accounts with privacy settings or using AI platforms that are certified as secure. ITS can also assist the school in designing a local AI system, so data remains managed internally and is better protected,” he explained.

More than just a training, this event served as a collaborative platform for alumni, the university, and the school. In line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), this program supports SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure) through the use of technology for inclusive and innovative learning. Thus, the program is expected to foster educators who are adaptive, creative, and ready to face the challenges of the digital era.
