Yogyakarta, IT Journalistic — The Master’s Program in Applied Linguistics, Faculty of Languages, Arts, and Culture, Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY), hosted an event titled “Language Innovation in the Digital Era: The Role of Computational Thinking in Linguistic Transformation and Social Relevance,” with the main theme “Synergy of Applied Linguistics, Language Education, and Computational Thinking in the Society 5.0 Era.” Held on Wednesday, 17 September 2025, the event featured the Head of the Information Technology Department Dr.techn. Ir. R. V. Hari Ginardi, M.Sc. from Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) as a speaker and was attended by several UNY officials.
The event was officially opened by the Vice Rector for Academic Affairs of UNY, Prof. Nur Hidayanto Pancoro Setyo Putro, S.Pd., M.Pd., Ph.D. In his address, he emphasized the importance of integrating computational thinking into the development of applied linguistics. He stated that the focus of applied linguistics has now shifted. Beyond studying language structure, the field also leverages technology and computational thinking approaches to design teaching methods that are not only effective but also adaptable to ever-changing contemporary needs.

An academic cooperation agreement was signed by the Dean of the Faculty of Languages, Arts, and Culture (FBSB) UNY, Prof. Dr. Zulfi Hendri, M.Sn. and the Head of the Information Technology Department (DTI) ITS, Dr.techn. Ir. R. V. Hari Ginardi, M.Sc., signifying the commitment of both institutions to strengthen research collaboration and development in applied linguistics.
Dr. Hari Ginardi explained the essential nature of combining computational thinking with digital technology. According to him, this integration is the foundation for advancing language data processing, creating innovative learning platforms, and driving progress in natural language processing within applied linguistics.
The event was attended by approximately 80 participants, consisting of students from the Applied Linguistics program, Faculty of Languages, Arts, and Culture (FBSB) UNY. Enthusiasm was evident from the interactive and dynamic Q&A session.

Dr. Yeni Artati, M.Hum., as the Head of the Master’s Program in Applied Linguistics at UNY, closed the event by emphasizing that interdisciplinary collaborations like this are crucial for creating sustainable innovation in the digital era.
Through this activity, the Information Technology Department (DTI) ITS once again demonstrated its contribution to supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically SDG 4: Quality Education and SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure.
