Dear ITS Students and Staff,

The Future Research Talent (FRT) awards are jointly offered by ANU College of Science and Medicine, ANU College of Systems and Society and ANU College of Law, Governance and Policy to staff and students from Indonesia.

The FRT is a competitive and prestigious program that attracts the very best students and staff from high-quality Indonesian institutions and provides them exposure to ANU research in the Sciences, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medical research disciplines.

Established for Indonesia in 2020, the FRT program has enabled 56 scholars from Indonesia to undertake research projects at ANU. Most FRT alumni have progressed to PhD programs at top institutions globally and in Indonesia, including several who have returned to ANU to further their research.

The FRT program offers a valuable opportunity for Indonesia’s emerging research talent to form international linkages and develop research skills at one of the world’s leading universities (ANU is ranked #29 in the world in QS World University Rankings 2027). It strengthens Australia’s research ecosystem and contributes to Australia’s research capacity and its strategic partnership with Indonesia, building networks that support innovation and knowledge exchange across borders.

FRT awards provide selected Indonesian staff and students with an opportunity to travel to ANU to pursue collaborative research, for a period of 11-12 weeks, in a range of Sciences, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medical research disciplines. FRT is a competitive and prestigious program attracting scholars from top-tier Indonesian institutions. The program offers a valuable opportunity for Indonesia’s emerging research talent to form international connections and develop research skills at one of the world’s leading universities*.

Value and benefits

The value of each FRT award is A$8,500.

The amount offered under the FRT program must be utilised to directly support the recipient’s participation in collaborative research at the ANU College of Science and Medicine, ANU College of Systems and Society, and ANU College of Law, Governance and Policy and may be allocated towards costs associated with, but not limited to return airfare, visa (including any associated medical expenses), travel insurance, accommodation, and general living expenses. The management of award funds is the responsibility of the recipient.

Eligibility

  • Students: ITS Students from Undergraduate batch 2024 or Master batch 2026
    PhD candidates are not allowed to apply.
  • Staff/Faculty Member: This program also open for ITS Staff/Faculty Members who hold Bachelor or Master degree are best suited. Staff/Faculty member who holds PhD degree is not eligible.
    Research projects / areas / groups that are open to hosting both staff and students are identified with # symbol, and those that are open only to staff (from specific universities) by ** symbol, those that are open for students only doesnt contain any symbol.
  • Note: This program is not open for Master students from Professional or Executive Classes. The aim of the program is to support scholars that have a passion for research and are interested in developing a career in scientific research.

    • Before exploring the available research projects below, please note the following key symbols used throughout the discipline listings:Projects marked with #: Are open pen to hosting staff as well as undergraduate and postgraduate students.Projects marked with ^: Can be extended beyond the standard 12-week FRT program duration, supported with additional funding. Please refer to individual project descriptions for further details.

      Projects marked with **: Are exclusively open to staff applicants.

      Projects with no symbol: Are for the standard 12-week duration and open to undergraduate and postgraduate students only.

Research Projects across various disciplinary areas at ANU that are available as part of the 2027 FRT scheme are listed on the FRT webpage. Applicants must choose at least one, but also allowed to choose up to three, research projects from that list in their FRT application.

To be eligible for an FRT award, the candidate must:

  • be a citizen of Indonesia residing in Indonesia;
  • be able to demonstrate a high level of academic ability and research potential;
  • be an academic staff member or a student enrolled in a program at a collaborating institution in Indonesia;
  • be nominated for award consideration by a collaborating Indonesian institution specified by the ANU College of Science and Medicine, ANU College of Systems and Society, and ANU College of Law, Governance and Policy;
  • be seeking to undertake a research project in one of the specific fields of research proposed by the ANU College of Science and Medicine, ANU College of Systems and Society, and ANU College of Law, Governance and Policy; and,
  • have not previously received an FRT award from the ANU College of Science and Medicine, ANU College of Systems and Society, and ANU College of Law, Governance and Policy.

Registration for students

Required Documents:

  1. Transcript. (English version). The GPA of applicants must higher than 3.0(out of 4.0)
  2. Certificate of Enrollment (for student)
  3. Scanned passport information page with minimum validity one year prior to September 2027
  4. Valid English Proficiency Test Score (original). TOEFL ITP/iBT/IELTS/Duolingo (TEFL/ EFL are not accepted) with minimum score equal to B2 CEFR ora copy of written work in English (e.g., a research paper) or a one-minute self-recorded video demonstrating English language proficiency.
  5. Two academic reference letters using template provided by ANU
  6. Statement Letter (please download from here bit.ly/its-student-exchange )
  7. Updated CV
  8. Scanned of Parents letter support (the letter must signed by your parents and the letter must mention about the awareness of your parents about this program. Please also mention that your parents support you for the financial and other things if you are accepted in this program) (for student)
  9. Motivation Letter
  10. Research Proposal (2-3 pages) for each project
  11. Certificate of GCW Non Degree (minimum C) or Result Test GCW Non Degree min 80 (for student)
