Laboratory of Algorithms and Programming Introduces AI to Teachers at SD Islam Darul Arqom 1 and 2 Surabaya

As a form of service to the community, students from the Faculty of Electrical Technology and Intelligent Informatics (FTEIC) ITS who are part of the Laboratory of Algorithms and Programming conducted training on utilizing AI and LLM for teachers at SD Islam Darul Arqom 1 and 2 Surabaya, focusing on the use of generative AI through prompt engineering.

Surabaya, FTEIC ITS – The Laboratory of Algorithms and Programming held a community service event focused on the use of artificial intelligence(Artificial Intelligence/AI) for elementary school teachers on Wednesday, September 16, 2026. The activity was conducted at the Informatics Engineering Lab of Algorithms Programming, involving 10 laboratory administrators and 10 teachers. During the event, teachers were taught how to use generative AI through prompt engineering.

This activity was motivated by the gap in technology usage between academia and elementary schools. According to Gerry Nicholas, an Informatics Engineering student from the class of 2023, many activities at elementary schools are still carried out without assistance from AI. In fact, the use of AIis considered able to speed up and ease teachers’ work while bridging existing technological gaps.

In the preparation process, students observed that there was a specific gap among elementary schools. Therefore, students felt responsible to help as part of their duty to serve the general public. The initial step involved finding schools willing to hold such events. After deeming it suitable, the activity focused on AI.

The event was titled “Training on the Utilization of AI (Artificial Intelligence) and LLM (Large Language Model) in Learning at SD Islam Darul Arqom 1 and 2 Surabaya”. The material presented focused on the use of generative AI through prompt engineering, as reflected in the title of the event.

During the activity, teachers showed high enthusiasm. Initially, they were unfamiliar with AI but enthusiastic about the instruction given. Teachers frequently asked questions related to the material and demonstrated a spirit for learning.

The main challenge faced by students was more concentrated on the process of searching for schools. This process required considerable time before the activity could be implemented.

Students hope that teachers directly affected can implement the knowledge they have gained. Students also wish that other elementary schools can draw inspiration from this event, independently explore and trace how to utilize AI, and share the same goals. (Humas – Ny)
