ITS International Office will once again hold the annual Community and Technological Camp-abbreviated as ”CommTECH” for the seventh time since 2012. Designed as a platform to discuss and solve local problems by applying global knowledge, CommTECH seeks to introduce ITS as one of Indonesia’s leading technological institutes. This year’s CommTECH, CommTECH Camp Highlight 2017, invites 45 participants consisting of university students, faculty staff, and representative lecturers from a wide array of international universities joining the program from July 12-July 25, 2017.

Unlike the previous CommTECH programs, CommTECH Camp Highlight 2017’s participants originate from various countries including China, Philippines, Brunei Darussalam, Thailand, Vietnam, Japan, Singapore to Australia, Germany, Russia and many more. This program allows participants to choose one of two courses being offered, which are ”Sustainable Urban Water Management” and ”Smart City”. In addition, participants will get a glimpse of Indonesian culture, such as learning Bahasa Indonesia, practicing folk music and dance as well as experiencing firsthand Indonesia’s traditional games.

In accordance with our commitment to deliver meaningful impact to Surabaya and its surroundings, the 14-day program involves multiple parties to further enhance the courses. One small example is, CommTECH Camp Highlight 2017 is going to collaborate with two local elementary schools to engage and interact with the participants during the traditional music and dance sessions. This program also utilizes Surabaya’s urban villages or kampungs, where participants will be able to observe the manufacturing process of specialty products made locally in the kampungs. Moreover, visits to some of Surabaya’s government agencies will e a part of the learning process. Last but not least, participants will bear witness to the marvel of Indonesia’s natural landscape with the trip to Mount Bromo.

After eight successful CommTECH programs, there has been increasing partnerships between ITS and participants’ universities. This is proven by the amount of the customized short programs we have held through demands from foreign universities such as ASEAN Student Camp 2014 with KMUTT Thailand and Asian Global Development Camp 2015 with Shantou University Business School, China.
