FTEIC ITS SURABAYA – Efforts to build an orderly, clean, comfortable, and safe work culture continue to be strengthened within the Faculty of Intelligent Electrical and Informatics Technology (FTEIC) at Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS). Not only targeting the faculty environment, the series of 5S+S ITS genba activities also reaches the six departments under FTEIC through the implementation of Genba Phase 1 during October 2026.

This two-week activity is part of the evaluation of the 5S+S ITS work culture implementation, carried out through direct inspection (genba) of various objects and work areas. The six departments taking part in the assessment are the Departments of Electrical Engineering, Informatics Engineering, Information Systems, Computer Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, and Information Technology.

During the process, the 5S+S ITS assessor team evaluated various teams in each department based on the results of their self-assessment on Object 1 and Object 2, which have been enrolled in the 5S+S ITS program. The purpose of this assessment is to see how far the work culture has been implemented, while also identifying aspects that still need improvement.

The 5S+S ITS work culture, which covers Sisih, Susun, Sapu, Standar, Sinambung, and Selamat, serves as the foundation for creating a work environment that is more organized, clean, standardized, and comfortable, with safety as a priority. Through genba activities, each team has the opportunity to directly evaluate the condition of its work environment and improve consistency in applying good work habits.

The implementation of the 5S+S ITS work culture has shown fairly good progress from year to year. This improvement motivates all work units, including the departments within FTEIC, to keep making improvements and to maintain the work environment standards they have achieved. More than just meeting assessment indicators, 5S+S is expected to become a culture embedded in everyday work activities.

In line with Genba Phase 1, each team is also focused on completing “Logbook 1 during October 2026” as documentation of activities, implementation progress, and the improvement efforts that have been made. The logbook serves as one of the monitoring and evaluation instruments to ensure the sustainability of 5S+S implementation across every assessed object.

The next series of activities will continue with “Genba Phase 2 in early December 2026,” including the completion of Logbook 2 by each team. This follow-up phase is expected to show the progress of improvements and the enhanced quality of 5S+S work culture implementation compared with the previous phase of assessment.

Through the involvement of all departments, FTEIC ITS continues to promote a stronger work culture that is disciplined, professional, and oriented toward continuous improvement. The spirit of 5S+S is realized not only through readiness for the assessors’ evaluation, but also through a shared commitment to keeping the work environment orderly, clean, safe, and comfortable at all times.

“A quality work culture is not merely the result of an assessment, but a reflection of the consistency and commitment of all ITS community members in creating an ever-better work environment.”
