<\/p>\nAs part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen international research partnerships, ITS is actively involved in the\u00a0e-Asia research program\u00a0focused on battery recycling. The project, titled\u00a0RESPEC (Closed-loop Recycle Process of Spent Primary and Secondary Batteries and the Reutilization for Environmental Applications & Circular Economy), emphasizes the role of technology in addressing battery waste management for environmental protection. The increasing use of electric vehicles and digital devices has led to a rise in used battery waste, posing significant environmental risks. This joint research project seeks to offer science-based and competency-driven solutions to these global challenges.<\/p>\n
The collaboration involves\u00a0three partner universities:\u00a0ITS,\u00a0Chulalongkorn University (Thailand), and\u00a0Meiji University (Japan). The project is led by\u00a0Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rojana Pornprasertsuk\u00a0from the Department of Materials Science, Faculty of Science, Chulalongkorn University. From Meiji University, the team is represented by\u00a0Prof. Tomoaki Watanabe, while\u00a0Assoc. Prof. Dr. Lukman Noerochim\u00a0from the Department of Materials and Metallurgical Engineering serves as the team leader from ITS. Other ITS team members include\u00a0Prof. Dr. Darminto\u00a0and\u00a0Dr. Retno Asih, both from the Department of Physics, and\u00a0Prof. Dr. Yatim Lailun Ni\u2019mah\u00a0from the Department of Chemistry \u2014 all part of the\u00a0Faculty of Science and Data Analytics (FSAD). Another team member is\u00a0Dr. Widyastuti, also from the same department as Dr. Lukman Noerochim.<\/p>\n

According to\u00a0QS World University Rankings 2025,\u00a0Chulalongkorn University ranks 221st globally, with a strong academic reputation score of 82. ITS and Chulalongkorn University have had an active\u00a0MoU and MoA\u00a0since\u00a0February 10, 2024, which supports academic collaboration, staff and student exchanges, and joint publications. Based on ITS DRPM publication data from 2020 to 2025, there have been\u00a028 co-authored publications\u00a0between ITS and Chulalongkorn University \u2014 the highest among all Thai institutions collaborating with ITS. The e-Asia research project is one of the initiatives developed under this MoU and has enabled researchers to engage in multiple forms of collaboration beyond joint publications.<\/p>\n
Given the close academic ties between the teams,\u00a0Prof. Anongnat Somwangthanaroj\u00a0from the Department of Chemical Engineering at Chulalongkorn \u2014 who is also a member of the e-Asia project \u2014 was invited to deliver lectures as part of the\u00a0Guest Lecture Series and Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL)\u00a0program on\u00a0April 15\u201316, 2025, hosted by the Department of Materials and Metallurgical Engineering at ITS. This program, organized by the\u00a0ITS Directorate of Global Engagement (DKG), featured Prof. Anongnat as a visiting lecturer for the courses\u00a0Energy Materials\u00a0and\u00a0Scientific Methodology, which were taught in both online and in-person formats under the coordination of\u00a0Dr. Lukman Noerochim. On the other side of the partnership,\u00a0Assoc. Prof. Dr. Widyastuti\u00a0was invited on\u00a0Tuesday, July 22, 2025, to discuss the further development of collaborative research initiatives. A\u00a0Focus Group Discussion (FGD)\u00a0was held at\u00a0Building 4, 10th Floor, Department of Chemical Engineering, Chulalongkorn University, and was attended by faculty and researchers, including heads of research centers and\u00a0Assoc. Prof. Dr. Soorathep Kheawhom, Head of the Department of Chemical Engineering and fellow member of the e-Asia research team. Following the FGD, the ITS delegation visited the\u00a0Battery Laboratory, supervised by Prof. Anongnat, and several other labs under the Department of Chemical Engineering. Joining the visit was\u00a0Liyana Labiba Zulfa, a doctoral student in the Department of Chemistry, FSAD, ITS, who is also involved in this research and currently preparing for a\u00a0postdoctoral program at Chulalongkorn University. Liyana has been actively publishing her research since her undergraduate studies under the supervision of\u00a0Prof. Dr. Ratna Ediati, with\u00a024 publications, including\u00a015 Q1-ranked journal articles.<\/p>\n

The laboratory visit and academic discussion continued at the\u00a0Department of Materials Science, guided by\u00a0Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rojana Pornprasertsuk, together with fellow e-Asia researchers\u00a0Assoc. Prof. Dr. Jiaqian Qin\u00a0(recognized among the\u00a0Top 2% Scientists in the World) and\u00a0Asst. Prof. Dr. Prasit Pattananuwat. The ITS delegation was formally received by\u00a0Asst. Prof. Dr. Apirat Theerapapvisetpong, Head of the Department of Materials Science. The e-Asia research project has so far resulted in\u00a0two joint publications in 2025, published in\u00a0Next Energy<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Materials Chemistry and Physics<\/em>\u00a0journals.<\/p>\n This research initiative on battery recycling is also aligned with other ongoing international collaborations, including the\u00a0INSPIRASI Program\u00a0between ITS with\u00a0Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore, and a\u00a0Prototype Research Scheme funded by\u00a0HETI ADB.
