The Department of Industrial Chemical Engineering at Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) is a leading academic division dedicated to vocational and applied education in chemical engineering. As part of ITS’s commitment to advancing technical education, the Department of Industrial Chemical Engineering focuses on preparing students to meet the demands of modern industry through hands-on learning and sustainable engineering practices.
This department has its roots in 1985 with the founding of the Diploma Three (D3) Program in Chemical Engineering under the Faculty of Non-Degree Technology (FNGT). It was established as part of a national initiative to address the growing need for mid-level technical professionals in Indonesia’s chemical sector. The program emphasized practical skills and industry relevance, aligning with the country’s vocational education goals.
In 1991, the Ministry of Education and Culture issued Decree No. 1312/O/1991, which led to the integration of all FNGT programs into their respective faculties. The D3 Chemical Engineering Program was transitioned into the Department of Chemical Engineering under the Faculty of Industrial Technology (FTI), maintaining its core mission of vocational training while benefiting from improved academic coordination.
A major transformation occurred in 2017, when the program evolved into the Department of Industrial Chemical Engineering, becoming part of the newly established Faculty of Vocational Studies (FV). This strategic move allowed ITS to centralize its vocational education programs, encouraging stronger curriculum development, closer industry partnerships, and innovation in applied learning.
In 2019, the department expanded its academic offerings by launching the Applied Bachelor Program in Industrial Chemical Engineering Technology (TRKI). This program was designed to prepare students for careers in sustainable process engineering, equipping them with the competencies required to manage and develop eco-friendly industrial systems through applied science and innovation.
Today, the Department of Industrial Chemical Engineering continues to grow as a center of excellence for vocational and applied chemical engineering education. With a strong emphasis on sustainability, industrial relevance, and practical expertise, the department plays a crucial role in shaping professionals who are ready to meet the challenges of the global chemical industry.
