The Waste Management Plan at Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) is formulated by adopting a waste induction approach as the main strategy to reduce waste generation at the source. This approach focuses on identifying, controlling, and minimizing potential waste generated from all academic and non-academic activities within the campus environment. As a technology-based higher education institution, ITS is committed to integrating waste management as an essential component of sustainable campus development.
The waste induction approach begins with mapping the sources and types of waste generated across the ITS campus, including academic buildings, laboratories, offices, canteens, dormitories, and public areas. Each work unit is encouraged to calculate daily and periodic waste generation potential as a basis for developing effective waste reduction strategies. These data are then used to design targeted policies, such as controlling the use of single-use materials and optimizing operational processes to improve efficiency.
In its implementation, ITS applies preventive policies by limiting waste generation from upstream sources. These measures include reducing plastic packaging, promoting the use of reusable dining utensils in campus canteens, and digitizing administrative services to minimize paper consumption. Academic activities, seminars, and campus events are required to adopt environmentally friendly concepts through careful planning of consumption and logistics to reduce leftovers and waste. As a result, potential waste generation can be minimized before entering the final waste management stage.
Waste that is still generated is managed through an integrated waste segregation system. Organic waste is processed into compost, while recyclable inorganic waste with economic value is managed through waste banks and partnerships with recycling stakeholders. Meanwhile, residual waste that cannot be processed is reduced in volume before being transported to final disposal facilities.
The waste induction approach at ITS is further supported by the use of technology and continuous environmental education. Digital recording systems are utilized to monitor waste generation from each unit, enabling regular evaluation and continuous improvement. Through the active involvement of the academic community, this waste management plan is expected to foster an environmentally conscious culture, significantly reduce waste generation, and strengthen ITS’s role as a pioneer of green and sustainable campuses in Indonesia.
