Petrokimia Gresik Launches Smart Bagging Ecosystem to Boost Optimal Fertilizer Supply

The Smart Bagging Ecosystem is an innovation implemented in the warehouse and bagging units of PT Petrokimia Gresik as a strategic step to optimize the distribution process of subsidized fertilizers. This system was developed as part of the company’s digital transformation initiative to support efficiency in national fertilizer distribution. Through the application of this smart ecosystem concept, PT Petrokimia Gresik aims to strengthen monitoring and effectiveness across all operational lines—from raw material procurement and production processes to the fertilizer bagging stage—ensuring greater integration and transparency.

The Smart Bagging Ecosystem Project is designed to improve the overall governance of subsidized fertilizer distribution and to support the realization of national food self-sufficiency. This effort also reflects PT Petrokimia Gresik’s readiness to face the Industry 5.0 era, where synergy between humans and technology serves as the key to enhancing productivity and sustainability. Through this optimization, the subsidized fertilizer supply process is expected to become more efficient, accurate, and well-targeted, ultimately contributing positively to national food security.

In its management and implementation, the project involves organizing and supervisory teams from various institutions, including the Research and Development (R&D) team of PT Petrokimia Gresik, in collaboration with academics, lecturers, and students from multiple institutions, one of which is the Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS). The system is implemented in the warehousing area of PT Petrokimia Gresik, East Java, utilizing modern technologies such as an Artificial Intelligence-based Early Warning System (EWS) for quality control, Smart Stitch Detection to monitor sack seam quality, and Smart Colour Fertilizer to ensure fertilizer color consistency through image processing.

Additionally, features like the AI-Enhanced Monitoring System and Smart Robo Safety are applied to detect workers’ compliance in using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). With the integration of these technologies, the Smart Bagging Ecosystem is expected to enhance workplace safety while simultaneously improving operational efficiency across all production and distribution lines.
