The Badak LNG Project is a collaborative initiative between Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) Surabaya and PT Badak LNG, focusing on enhancing the operational efficiency of the plant. This program is carried out as a strategic effort to find solutions to the high risk of critical equipment failure, particularly in the production trains, which are vital components in the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) processing. Through this project, both parties are committed to developing a science- and technology-based approach to strengthen the maintenance system and ensure the sustainability of the company’s operations.
The primary objective of this collaborative project is to enhance the effectiveness of equipment maintenance systems at PT Badak LNG by utilizing Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) and Equipment Criticality Ranking (ECR) methods. This approach enables the company to assess the reliability of each piece of equipment and determine maintenance priorities based on its criticality level. By implementing RCM and ECR analysis, it is expected that downtime risks due to equipment failure can be minimized, while production process efficiency can be significantly improved.
The project is being driven by the Teknosains Team from ITS, consisting of supervisors, industry experts, and undergraduate and graduate students from ITS. The activities are being carried out in the operational area of PT Badak LNG, specifically on several production trains in Bontang, North Kalimantan. During the implementation, the team identifies equipment with high criticality levels and formulates optimal maintenance strategies. Through this collaboration, ITS and PT Badak LNG hope to create a more effective, efficient, and sustainable reliability-based maintenance system, while also strengthening the synergy between industry and academia in supporting the progress of national energy technology.
