The collaboration project between Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (TMMIN) and the Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS), carried out through the Manufacturing System Laboratory assistants, has been officially implemented as part of the application of Toyota Production System principles in the agro-industry sector. This program focuses on efforts to enhance the efficiency and competitiveness of coffee MSMEs in Indonesia, particularly in the post-harvest process at the Wonosalam Coffee Cooperative in Jombang, East Java. This initiative serves as a concrete step toward supporting the sustainability of local industries through technology-based approaches and modern management systems.
This activity was initiated as part of TMMIN’s Corporate Social and Environmental Responsibility (TJSL) program, which focuses on three main pillars: environment, education, and social development. In its implementation, the project involved ten lecturers from the ITS Manufacturing System Laboratory, including Putu Dana Karningsih, Ph.D. as Jishuken Manager, and Rindi Kusumawardani and Reza Aulia Akbar as Jishuken Members. They were supported by 20 students from the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering (DTSI) at ITS, as well as the TMMIN team, in conducting analysis and reviewing the efficiency improvement results in the coffee production process on-site.
In its application, the project adopts two main principles of the Toyota Production System (TPS): Lean Manufacturing or Just-in-Time (JIT) and Jidoka. The JIT principle is applied by ensuring that each process produces only what is needed by the next process, while Jidoka focuses on preventing product defects through automation with a human touch.
