Penyebab gempa outer rise adanya tegangan tektonik yang bekerja pada sumber gempa outer rise tegangan ektensional atau tarikan, gempa di zona outer rise ini memiliki mekanisme sumber sesar turun (normal fault). Mekanisme sumber gempa outer rise bisa juga karena sesar geser (transform) seperti yang terjadi di Aceh pada tanggal 11 April 2012.
