Biology is a basic science that focuses on the exploration and investigation of life, from single molecules to interactions between living things and their environment. In Biology Department, lecturers and students are directed not only to focus on fundamental aspects of the living organism, but also to complex questions related to biosciences and biotechnology applications. The biology department has four main areas of interest for students, namely biosciences and plant technology, zoology and animal engineering, microbiology and biotechnology, and ecology. The four areas are directed to various biological issues in the environmental and marine field through an interdisciplinary approach.
To support these efforts, now biology department has 24 permanent lectures. Nine of them hold doctoral degrees, and 13 hold graduate degrees from leading institutions such as Max Planck Institute, Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, University of Strasbourg and Tohoku University. The lecturers are also excellent researchers in their field, among the successes of finding anti-cancer compounds from marine sponges, antidiabetic agents from cork fish, to coral transplants to combat bleaching and coral damage due to climate change. Based on data from Webometrics, one lecturer also ranked third as a researcher with the highest H-index in ITS by the version of Google Scholar, which means that his research has a significant impact in the scientific world.
Not only the lecturers, the students also several times won the various scientific-based competition at national and international level. Such as silver medals in the National Olympiad of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (ON-MIPA), bronze medals in Pertamina OSN biology, awards in scientific writing contests, and awards at international conferences and exhibitions. In the non-academic field, students also successfully won three karate championships in the Regional Student Sports Week and the first champion of Al-Quran in the National Student MTQ.
Graduates of Biology department has career opportunities in all sectors that are directly and indirectly related to biology, such as being researchers and practitioners in agriculture and forestry, fisheries and marine, food and animal feed industry, healthcare, chemical and cosmetics industries, food and beverage industry, property, education, government, energy, and science communication. In addition to a career in private institutions and government, alumni of Biology Department also won postgraduate scholarships for master and Ph.D. studies, both at Indonesia and abroad, such as Wageningen University and Research, the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, the University of Tübingen, and the University of Queensland.
This program takes eight semesters for four years. To obtain a bachelor’s degree, undergraduate students need to complete 144 credits and take TOEFL test with a minimum score of 477. Four main areas of interest for this program, i.e biosciences and plant technology, zoology and animal engineering, microbiology and biotechnology, and ecology.
This program aims to educate and train students in developing and updating biological sciences by mastering and understanding scientific methods. Students are expected to be able to solve problems research activities, as well as to improve intellectual and professional capacity. Graduates are expected to achieve the ability of work fields, knowledge mastery, and managerial skills. There are three areas of interest in Biology Department i.e marine biology, environmental biology, and biotechnology.

Biosciences and Plant Technology
This laboratory provides basic botany laboratory, plant tissue culture, and greenhouse. Those laboratories also completed by modern tools such as an electron, photomicroscope, microtome, and laminar airflow. The research roadmap is marine and coastal resource inventories, marine and coastal ecophysiology, analysis of secondary metabolite content, and cultivation of algae and coastal vegetation. Zoology And Animal Engineering
This laboratory specialized to learn animal biologies, such as structure and development, taxonomy, physiology, behavior, invertebrate biology, entomology, parasitology, histopathology, fisheries biology, carcinology, endocrinology, and cultivation. Microbiology and Biotechnology
This laboratory develops research from exploitation until getting The collection of pure microorganism culture that is equipped with character and function in the environment. So from the collection can develop biological technology applications in industry and environmental management. The research focus in the laboratory of microbiology and biotechnology, such as exploration of the diversity of aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms, degrading microorganisms from land and marine, bioremediation agent microorganisms biofouling studies and molecular studies for microorganisms characterization. This laboratory aims to develop students competence to analyze and plan biological resources in a variety of ecosystems, both natural and artificial. Ecology laboratory also become The Center of Environmental Damage Analysis, Impact and its rehabilitation efforts through lectures, practicum, internship and a final project. The research focus related to exploration and biological resources of land, coastal and marine management; Environmental potential change; Analysis of freshwater and seawater benthos; Survey and Monitoring Coral Reefs using Line Intercept Transect (LIT); For more information please visit here. Department of Biology ITS has established collaboration program with various institutions, such as government and private agencies in internship and final project. Related government agencies such as East Java Province Government, Health Office, Fisheries and Maritime Office, Surabaya Zoo, Lembaga Ilmu Pengetahuan Indonesia (LIPI), and Ministry of Development of Disadvantaged Areas. While the related private parties namely PT. Sadhana, PT. Perkebunan Nusantara, PT. PAL, P3GI, PT. Nestle, and various other research centers. Collaboration is also done through giving scholarships to students.
Biology Department also provides a scholarship for collaboration program, such as PT. Epson, Pertamina, Toyota Astra, Singapore Air Lines, PT.
