Be a Science Researcher and Reliable Inventor Through The Basic Studies of Natural Phenomena

The physics department studies the fundamental laws about control of the universe and its application in technology to improve the welfare of mankind. Students will be invited to develop mathematical, analytical, experimental, and laboratory skills, and communicate scientific research in writing. In this department, students will gain a quantitative and conceptual understanding of the five key areas of excellence in this department such as material physics, geophysics, optoelectronics, theoretical physics, and instrumentation.

Currently, Physics Department has 36 permanent lectures, Six of them are professors, and ten have doctoral.  In 2012, 13 lecturers in Physics Department have the certification of educators from the Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education. Lecturers in this Department are also widely believed to be consultants in companies or government agencies and guest speakers at various universities. One of the professors in this department once served as Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) Rector to-4 in 1973-1982.

Besides excellent academic and learning qualities, Physics Department also has students who dedicate themselves to the research interests and several times the name of ITS, among them won silver and bronze medals in National Olympiad of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (ON-MIPA) as well as research competition, both nationally and internationally. Students also pioneered the establishment of ITS Astronomy Club, a community that accommodates research for astronomers in ITS.

The alumni of Physics Department not only take the role of physicists in research institutes but also have a career that utilizes the ability of quantitative and analytical thinking. Among these are engineering, education, health, and science policy, both in the public and private sectors. Those advantages put ITS into the top five best universities in Indonesia in Physics and Astronomy based on the ranking of QS World University Ranking by Subject 2016.

Undergraduate Program                                                                                           

This program takes eight semesters for four years. To obtain a bachelor’s degree, undergraduate students need to complete 144 credits and take TOEFL test with a minimum score of 477.

Master Program

This program takes four semesters or two years, and students need to complete 36 credits. Students will get learning, research activities in the laboratory, discussions, and seminars, and thesis research.

Doctoral Program

The main part of the doctoral program in this department is research activities that contribute to the new development of science, technology, and art. Doctoral program education begins with learning activities, and continued with the qualification test before the research for the dissertation is done.

The research program in physics department divided into four focus, such as:

  1.   Material Physics

Studying and researching types of ceramic, polymer, metal, semiconductor, superconductor materials. Current nanomaterial research is also of particular concern in Physics Department. The studies concerning synthesis, characterization, theory, and modeling. The study is directed to reveal application variables such as electrical, magnetic, mechanical, corrosion and acoustic properties intended to support the industry.

  1.   Earth Physics

The application of physics in studying the phenomena of the earth and its utilization for the mapping of natural structures and rocks beneath the surface of the earth. Geological symptoms include natural events that can occur in the earth, the ocean and the atmosphere and its interaction with human life. The under the natural structure of the settlement is closely related to the exploration interests of minerals (oil, gas, and minerals) as well as civil construction planning. Artificial structures beneath the surface can be utilized for environmental and archeological studies.

  1.   Optoelectronics

Learning and researching optical communication devices (optical fiber, and photonic devices) and microwave (antenna mobile communication, portable-phone) both experimentally and numerical analysis with FD-BPM & FD-TD method; and Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) with holography method and ESPI.

  1.   Physics Theory

Understanding, learning and disclosing the fundamental laws of nature, is specifically interested in the application of quantum field theory to particle physics and related actual issues.

  1.   Physics Instrumentation

Learn, research and develop the sensor, measurement, and data acquisition both analog and digital and online or real time. Sensor objects include natural processes, chemical processes, and are related to other physical quantities. Modeling and simulation are also developed for the design of instrumentation systems and control systems.

The physics department has much collaboration in education and research with the various institution. In education, Physics department works closely with the Directorate of Vocational and Religious Affairs Ministry for the improvement of academic background for physics teachers in SMK and Madrasah Tsanawiyah (MTs) to master level.

In research collaboration, physics department held collaboration with research institutes and universities such as National Nuclear Energy Agency (Batan), Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI), Bandung Institute of Technology, Padjadjaran University, Lambung Mangkurat University and Udayana University. While cooperation with the industrial parties includes Pertamina, Elnusa, ConocoPhillips, PT Semen Gresik, as well as East Java Technical Settlement Hall.

Meanwhile, in the international level, the institutions that are partners collaboration of the Department of Physics ITS whom are RIKEN Nishina Center in Japan, Curtin University of Technology in Australia, the University of Karlsruhe in Germany, Van der Wall – Zeeman Institute in the Netherlands, the MESA + Institute for Nanotechnology in Netherlands, Superconductivity Engineering Material Research Laboratory in Japan, and Institute of Solid State Physics in Japan.
