Revealing the Atomic and Molecular Scale Mechanisms

Chemistry is the basic science that studies matter on the atomic and molecular scale. This science reveals more details about the molecular mechanisms underlying activity in living organisms. In the 21st century, chemistry is at the heart of most industries. In this program, students are taught to understand the basic concepts of chemistry through lectures and laboratory experience. Students are guided to gain in-depth knowledge of the methodologies needed to solve complex problems and the ability to articulate ideas effectively to the scientific community. Chemistry Department has five key areas that form the basis for curriculum development, which includes inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, analytical chemistry, and biochemistry.

Currently, 21 of 35 lecturers in this department have a doctoral degree, with seven of them are Professors. Then fourteen other lecturers have S2 degrees. Components of lecturers in this department is a leading scientist in chemistry internationally. Several lecturers successfully won prestigious awards, such as L’Oreal-UNESCO for Women in Science Awards 2013. In 2016, The lecturer also achieved achievement as a 2nd Level Achieving Lecturer of Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) and 3-level Achievement Leader of ITS. Even one lecturer of Chemical ITS became the only ITS lecturer who was honored to be a fellow at the Academy of Young Scientists Indonesia (ALMI).

Students are also actively involved with lecturers dedicating themselves to the interests of research and development of science. In 2017, chemistry department passed the Most Student Creativity Program (PKM) from the Science Faculty at the National Student Scientific Week (Pimnas). Two of them managed to get a bronze medal. Award in the world of research and international-scale scientific writing is also often achieved by the students. Chemistry Department students are also part of a team of researchers in the energy-saving chemical-fueled fuel contest, Spektronics, which in 2017 won the world champion from the American Chemical Society.

Alumni are spread not only to researchers in universities, corporations or research institutions but also to science-based entrepreneurs to the world of communication. Nearly 60 percent of graduates work in fields related to chemistry. While three out of 10 alumni of Chemistry ITS continue their studies at the postgraduate level.

Undergraduate Program                                                                                           

This program takes eight semesters for four years. To obtain a bachelor’s degree, undergraduate students need to complete 144 credits and take TOEFL test with a minimum score of 477.

Master Program

This program takes four semesters or two years, and students need to complete 36 credits. Academic activities for master’s programs in Chemistry Department ITS includes lectures, research activities in laboratories, discussions, and seminars, and thesis research. Almost all the researchers of master students in Chemistry Department are supported by lecturers. Lecturers obtain research grants that are sourced from within and outside the country. Even some of the research is also done by students abroad through joint research or research internship program.

Doctoral Program

The central part of the doctoral program at the Chemistry Department of ITS is essentially a research activity, which provides new contributions to the development of science, technology, and the arts. Doctoral program education begins with lecture activities, and continued with the qualification test before the research for the dissertation is done.

Chemistry Department became the preferred and trusted chemical education institution in Indonesia, with its own advantages, proven to get block grant of Technological Skill Development Sector Project Bath III and Institution Competition Grant Program. The research program in chemistry department divided conducted in five laboratories, such as:

  1.   Chemical Material and Energy Laboratory

Research in this laboratory is focused on the energy, which examines the efficiency of fossil fuels and searches for fossil fuel substitute material as an alternative energy. Researchers in this laboratory also investigate the areas of defense equipment, advanced materials, and materials for infrastructure and environmental sustainability.

  1.   Chemical Natural Materials and Synthesis

Research in this laboratory is the investigation of bioactive compounds, fragrances and perisa, and energetic materials.

  1.   Molecular Geochemistry

Researchers at the lab are investigating biological markers for coal search, coal liquefaction, and developing organic fossil fuels.

  1.   Chemical Microorganisms

Research activities in this laboratory are directed to the study of the manufacture of antibiotics, bioplastics, biosurfactants, enzymes, and lipids.

  1.   Instrumentation and Analytical Science Laboratory

This laboratory develops research on biosensors, chemosensors, environment, foodstuffs, as well as energy, instrumentation, and corrosion.

The chemistry department has much collaboration in education and research with the various institution. Among them is getting the trust from the Directorate of Secondary and Vocational Education to improve the stratification of widaswara, SMK teachers, and Quality Assurance Institutions throughout Indonesia in the chemistry master’s degree program. A similar collaborative program is also implemented with the Ministry of Religious Affairs for chemistry teachers and with the Directorate of Teachers for lecturers and prospective lecturers from the 3T (outermost, leading, and behind) regions.

Chemistry Department also cooperates with double degree postgraduate programs with several overseas universities, such as Department of Chemical Engineering, National Taiwan University of Science and Technology; Department of Food Engineering and Bioresources Technology, Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand; Chemical Transformations of Natural Resource, Université de Picardie Jules Verne; and Université Paris-sud in France.

In research, Chemistry Department works closely with research institutions and universities, such as the Advanced Membrane Technology Research Center (AMTEC), the Center for Sustainable Nanomaterials (CS Nano) of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), and Kumamoto University Japan. In addition to research institutes, Chemistry Department also cooperates with industry, such as PT Pindad, PT Dahana, and National Aeronautics and Space Agency (LAPAN).
