Chemical Engineers are creators of various small components in everyday life, starting from clothes, fertilizer fuel, to food consumed every day. In general, chemical engineering is the science to design and operate a factory, equipment, and processes to convert raw materials into materials with higher economic value. Students are trained to plan and design process tools, operate, control and maintain factories and industries, construct a factory, conduct research and development processes, and plan and manage sales and service.Chemical Engineering Department was established in 1960 and currently has 48 highly qualified doctoral and master lectures. Students are educated as close as possible to industry and field. For that, students are taught by lab-based education methods and are required to perform practical work in industries and institutions involving chemical engineering disciplines. To support the process of learning and research, this department of Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) has 16 laboratories with a focus on their respective studies, a library with a collection of 6000 books and 18 international journals. Since 1998, Chemical Engineering ITS has received A accreditation from BAN PT and is now also certified AUN QA, ASEAN certification institution.Students also being guided to be competent in their respective fields of expertise, these department students also have a great work spirit and are known as a hard-working and responsible person, such as one of the outstanding students who successfully runner-up representing Student Petroleum Engineer Chapter ITS in India.Currently, alumni of Chemical Engineering Department have contributed a lot and have influenced both industry and government. For example Dwi Soetjipto who had become President Director and CEO of PT Semen Indonesia and had served as President Director of PT Pertamina. Graduates in this study works as a process engineer in the oil and gas industry, manufacturing, service, textile, chemical industry. Chemical Engineering graduates also have prospects in banking, engineering consultancy, and marketing. Graduates of Chemical Engineering ITS are also working as researchers in various research institutes and lecturers in universities.

Undergraduate ProgramUndergraduate students have to finish 144 credits, final project and internship will be a requirement for students to graduate. International Undergraduate ProgramThe International Undergraduate Program (also known as IUP) is a bachelor program that implements English as the language of instruction. The program offers the regular undergraduate curriculum and provides opportunities for students to take part in international activities in the form of Study excursion, Internship in an international or multinational company, Student exchange, Summer/short course, and Joint degree. Master ProgramA master program in Chemical Engineering is required to take courses and produce a research report (thesis) with a total credit of 36 credits. The program focuses on the knowledge of Transport Phenomenon, Reaction and Kinetics, Heat Exchanger, Thermal System Analysis, Catalysis, and Selected Technology. Doctoral ProgramDoctoral Program is designed with a total of 40 credits and can be completed for the 6th semester. Research activities are manifested in an official research report (dissertation), an internationally compulsory scientific article or two national scientific articles is a mandatory requirement before students are eligible to take a dissertation exam. Successfully passing the dissertation exam will become a requirement for graduation.

Research of this study is one of the most productive in ITS and their students have been accustomed to developing research early on. Chemical engineering has laboratories as research support facilities, i.e Mass Transfer Laboratory, and Heat, Lab. Material Technology, Lab. Chemical Reaction Technique, Lab. Chemical Process, Lab. Industrial Waste Treatment, Lab. Biomass and Energy Conversion, Lab. Thermodynamics Chemical Engineering, Lab. Biochemical Technology, Lab. Fluid Mechanics and Mixing, Lab. Design and Process Control, Electrochemical and Corrosion Lab. In the learning process, Chemical Engineering is supported by Chemical Analysis Lab, Organic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Microbiology, Chemical Engineering, Simulation, and Computation.

Chemical Engineering Department has a collaboration with PT. The Java-Bali power plant, PT Pertamina (PERSERO), PT Petrokimia Gresik, Aceh Province Government, Southeast Sulawesi Province Government,  NCTU Taiwan, Kumamoto University, The Hague University Netherlands.
