Biology

Department of Biology was founded in 1998; it was supported by a number of permanent faculty members with doctoral and master education background. Due to ITS orientation towards marine and maritime science, scientific roadmap of this department is designed to specifically focus on marine plants. The curriculum emphasizes the study of plants, animals, microorganisms and their ecosystem at the basic level to the practical/field level, and further to the promising molecular level. Several marine subjects to learn include marine biology, biology mangrove, marine fish culture, marine microbiology, oceanography, marine ecology, coral reef, water sport and diving, coastal and marine management. Through class teaching, laboratory and field experiences, students are supported to gain proficiency in gathering, interpreting and communicating scientific biological knowledge. Currently, there are 7 laboratories as follows: 2 Teaching Labs (botany and zoology teaching labs); Microbiology and biotechnology research labs; Ecology; Tissue culture; Zoology; and Botany research lab.

This department is currently managing undergraduate program with bachelor degree (S1). There are four research areas offered, as follows:

1. Botany

It specializes in studying science and biotechnology of plants. Since Biology undergraduate program focuses on marine, the roadmap of Botany concentration will be brought deeper to sea plants. Nowadays, Botany concentration of Biology undergraduate program is developing research in plant eco-physiology and structure, especially plants in coast and sea, the content of plant secondary metabolites, inventory, and systematic mapping of vegetation in the coastal areas of East Java, the cultivation of plants in vitro.
