ITS Students Participating in the Summer Program at The State University of New York – New Paltz
For some students, participating in an overseas program is an opportunity that not only broadens their horizons but also enriches their academic and professional experiences. This is also felt by several students who had the opportunity to participate in the Summer Program at The State University of New York – New Paltz. This program offers the chance to deepen knowledge outside their main field of study and experience learning in an international environment.
Falah Ibnu Rachman, one of the participants who initially studied Electrical Engineering at ITS, decided to take the Corporate Financial Management study program during this program. This decision was made for a strong reason: his desire to try a different field from electrical engineering and to increase his value by studying in America, which is known for having one of the best financial systems. “Since America is really famous, especially in finance, I want to try a field other than electrical engineering,” he said.
Another participant, Afandi Raditya, also chose a different program, namely Competitive Project Management. He reasoned that this field is highly relevant to the electrical engineering knowledge he has studied and has great potential to be applied in the workforce. “Project management will be useful later on, especially since I come from electrical engineering, so I chose a field that is relevant,” he explained.
During the program, the participants faced various challenges, especially in adapting to a different learning environment. At New Paltz, the more interactive and discussion-based teaching methods posed a particular challenge for those accustomed to the teaching system in Indonesia. “Here, you are required to be more active in asking questions and engaging in discussions. The lecturers don’t just teach, but also encourage us to think critically,” Falah revealed.

Another equally challenging experience was working in groups with other participants from various countries. Cultural and language differences presented their own challenges, but this provided valuable lessons on diversity and how to communicate effectively in an international environment.
Despite the challenges, this program offered many benefits to the participants. They not only gained new knowledge in finance and project management but also soft skills such as adaptability, teamwork, and critical thinking. The learning experience in New Paltz also provided a new perspective on seeing education as more inclusive and open.
In addition to academic activities, the participants also had the opportunity to explore the natural beauty of New York. One memorable moment was when they visited Minnewaska State Park, a nature reserve offering breathtaking scenery. “Although at first, we felt that Indonesia’s nature was more beautiful, the experience of walking in the forest and facing the challenges there left an unforgettable impression,” Falah shared enthusiastically.
Overall, the Summer Program at The State University of New York – New Paltz was a highly valuable experience for the participants. They returned home not only with additional knowledge and skills but also with stories and memories that they will carry throughout their lives. This program has opened their eyes to the importance of openness, adaptation, and continuous learning in an increasingly connected world.
