Wahyu Nur Hidayatun Nisa won 2nd Place Databoks Competition<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

ITS Campus, Seatrans News<\/strong> \u2014 Another student Department of Marine Transportation Engineering (DTTL) ITS who achieved achievements at the National level. It was Wahyu Nur Hidayatun Nisa who won the 2nd Place Databoks Competition by formulating several strategies to resurrect coal shipping.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In the literacy and data analysis competition for academics and the general public, the 2017 student wrote an article entitled <\/span>Pelayanan Batubara Indonesia Bangkit dari Belenggu Pandemi.<\/span><\/i><\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Indonesia is the world’s largest supplier of thermal seaborne<\/em> coal with total production of up to 451.58 million tonnes of coal annually. The coal is exported to India, China, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and other countries. However, according to the results of the analysis conducted by Wahyu, a familiar greeting from the student, there was a significant drop in demand to the figure of -34.19 percent.<\/p>\n

“Dry bulk shipping, especially coal, will be able to rise if it has the right strategy even in the midst of the endless Covid-19 pandemic,” said Wahyu.<\/p>\n

Wahyu’s proposed short-term strategy is to conduct integration strategies, namely by conducting horizontal integration, cooperation between shipping companies such as cargo sharing and vertical integration, in cooperation with related industries such as the coal mining industry, manufacturing, and distributors.<\/p>\n

In addition to strategic integration, Wahyu also advises shipping companies with coal commodities to optimize opportunity voyages, cooperate with banks, negotiate contracts for charterers, cooperate with the government, and efficient ship maintenance.<\/p>\n

As for the long term, the strategy proposed by Wahyu is to carry out the effectiveness of fleet use and open new markets. “Shipping companies can do analysis to open new routes or markets to countries that have never been intended,” explained Wahyu.<\/p>\n

Another strategy that can be applied according to the results of Wahyu’s analysis is to change the terms of financing. Wahyu said the terms Cost, Insurance, and Freight (CIF) will incur a total cost less than the Free On Board (FOB). So that another thing that coal shipping companies can do is target the market for commodities that can be carried by ships as cargo back to Indonesia.
