Energy for the Future

The threat of energy scarcity in the future and the environmental impacts of fossil fuels make ITS continue to developing innovation of new and renewable energy. ITS innovation on environmentally friendly energy is implemented through research activities shaded by the Center for Energy Studies under the Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM).

ITS Center for Energy is committed to supporting government programs in maintaining the security and sustainability of energy in Indonesia.  This objective is related to the National Energy Policy as stipulated in the Energy Policy White Paper of 2005-2025 as well as in the General Plan of National Energy (RUEN) contained in the government regulations.

In energy management, ITS Center for Energy puts forward the principles of fairness, sustainability, and environmental insight. This is completed to realize the independence and security of national energy. The main pillar of the ITS Center for Energy is conducting research and community service related to energy intensification, energy diversification and energy conservation.

The ITS Center for Energy has contributed to accelerate the development of renewable energy in Indonesia, among them are the establishment of the Center for Energy Conservation, raising the price of fuel and electricity or reducing subsidies, and strengthening the capacity of institutions and human resources related to energy development. ITS innovation in green energy comes from water, wind, geothermal, currents and ocean waves, solar cells, to biomass.

Research activities at ITS Center for Energy is focused on three areas:

1. Energy Diversification

  • The development of photovoltaic to be more effective and efficient.
  • The development of wind turbines to be more effective, efficient, and reliable.
  • Research activity in the field of electronics power to increase the contribution of local content components in the development of new and renewable energy integration.

2. Energy Intensification

  • The development of carbon capture techniques by chemical processes (capturing CO2 from plant chimneys that can be used to restore unproductive oil wells.
  • The development of carbon capture technique by physical process (capturing CO2 from generator chimney that can be used for recovery of unproductive oil wells.
  • Working with related parties on the utilization of CO2 for Enhancement Oil Recovery (EOR) to increase the proven oil reserves.

3. Energy Management and Energy Auditor

  • Conducting energy audit at Rectorate, Engineering Physics Department, and Research Center Building, as a pilot project which was attended by most of ITS Center for Energy members.
  • Delegate ITS Center for Energy members to participate in capacity building training held by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources in two waves.
  • Disseminate the energy management and energy auditors to ITS Center for Energy and the Eastern Part of Indonesian University Network (EPI-Unet) members.
  • Collaborate with Professional Certification Agency of Energy to conduct the Energy Auditor Competency Exam for industries in East Java.

The ITS Center for Energy has a collection of experts conducting research in new and renewable energy fields. The center has access to advanced research facilities at the ITS Energy and Environmental Laboratory. The research instruments contained in this laboratory include SEM-EDX, XRD, AFM, ICP-OES, XRF, HRMS, HPLC, and GC that are related to research needs in alternative energy fields. In addition, the laboratory is also equipped with field survey equipment in the form of laboratory automobiles with the ability to conduct water, soil and air quality analysis such as pH, DO, nitrate ion content, nitrite, sulphate, ammonia and chloride, water conductivity, CO, CO2, NOx, SOx, humidity, airborne dust, vibration and noise measuring devices, explosive vibration gauges, cetane and octane number measuring instruments, damp gauge and BBG measuring tools.
