Natural disaster often happens in various places in Indonesia such as the tsunami in Aceh, earthquakes in Yogyakarta, floods, Lapindo Mud Volcano, and volcanic eruptions, etc. Concerned with such problems, some researchers at ITS gathered and formed the Center for Disaster Studies (CDS) on March 24th, 2004. This research center was supported by Indonesian National Board for Disaster Management and the Indonesian Disaster Relief Society (MPBI). In 2012, CDS changed its name to when the issue of climate change became a hot topic in various parts of the world, PSKB changed its name to the Center for Earth, Disaster and Climate Change (PSKBPI). This research center is expected to gather internal resources and turned into a research field for many experts. This center of study continues to build awareness of disasters, especially for ITS academic community and public in general. Therefore, PSKBPI builds networks with various stakeholders engaged in the field of the earth, disaster, and climate change both nationally and internationally. Some of PSKBPI’s partners are: Indonesian Government, Indonesian National Board for Disaster Management (BNPB), Regional Board for Disaster Management (BPBD), Centre for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG), MPBI, PT PRB Forum, UNICEF, UNDP, UN OCHA , UNEP, UNDAC, SCDRR, AUSAID, USAID, OXFAM, GTZ, Paklim GIZ, NGOs and communities.PSKBPI has been also developed The Spatial Data Infrastructure Development Center (PPIDS), which is an institution formed by the Geospatial Information Agency (BIG). To facilitate coordination among researchers, PSKBPI formed 4 (four) Working Groups (WG) focusing on areas, including Earth, Disaster, Climate Change, and Spatial Data Infrastructure study.
PSKBPI supported by more than 15 experts utilize laboratory equipment spread in various related departments, such as Civil Engineering, Geomatics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Marine Engineering, etc.
Based on the PSKBPI research roadmap, PSKBPI research topics are include:
