After more than two decades, the ITS Department of Chemistry has become a chosen and trusted chemistry education institution with its own distinct advantages, as proven by receiving the "block grant" Technological Skill Development Sector Project Batch III and gaining trust from the Directorate of Vocational Secondary Education – Ministry of National Education to enhance the stratification of widyaiswara (instructors), vocational school (SMK) teachers, and Education Quality Assurance Institutions throughout Indonesia in the field of master's in chemistry.
The Department of Chemistry under the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) opened the Chemistry Master's Program (S-2) starting in the 2004/2005 academic year.
Supported by 32 academic staff with qualifications: 1 Professor, 12 Doctors, and 19 Masters. The available supporting facilities are as follows: Classrooms, 9 Laboratories, a Reading Room with more than 2,000 library materials, international scientific journals, national scientific journals, and various other facilities.
Objectives
Education in the Master's Program in Chemistry aims to educate and train participants in developing and updating chemical science by mastering and understanding scientific methods. In addition, participants will be able to solve problems in related scientific fields through research activities, as well as enhance their intellectual and professional capabilities.
Fields of Interest
The Chemistry Study Program has 6 fields of interest that students can choose according to their talents and abilities, including:
- NATURAL PRODUCT CHEMISTRY AND SYNTHESIS, Studying the chemical potential of plants as useful materials.
- ORGANIC GEOCHEMISTRY, Studying biomarker compounds such as alkanes, steroids, polyterpenes, and organosulfur from fossils as molecular parameters for petroleum exploration.
- CATALYST SYNTHESIS AND CHARACTERIZATION, Studying perovskites, zeolites, metal oxides, and metallocenes, catalyst applications for ion-exchange adsorbents, semiconductor materials, and alpha-olefin polymerization.
- BIOORGANIC CHEMISTRY AND BIOCATALYSIS, Studying biogenesis, hopanoid formation, and enzyme biotechnology for new material discovery.
- PHYSICAL CHEMISTRY, PHOTOCHEMISTRY, AND ELECTROPLATING, Studying membranes and polymers.
- INDUSTRIAL AND DOMESTIC WASTE METHODS, Studying the development of analytical methods, the utilization of aquatic plants for water quality management, and the analysis of heavy metals and organic waste.
Academic Activities
The Chemistry Master's (S-2) Study Program is conducted over 4 semesters (2 years), divided into two stages. The first stage consists of two semesters filled with coursework, while the second stage is filled with research activities and a thesis. Furthermore, research findings are published in seminars or national/international scientific journals and concluded with an examination before an evaluation committee. The maximum study period limit is 4 years. The minimum credit load is 40 credits (sks), including a thesis according to the curriculum. The academic calendar for Semester I begins in early September, while Semester II begins in early February and ends in June.

The Master's Program in Chemistry is equipped with supporting facilities owned by ITS, such as the Central Library, Computer Center, and M-Web. Other facilities are also available, such as the Chemistry Reading Room and nine laboratories owned by the Department of Chemistry, namely:
