Statistics


To achieve its Vision and Mission, the Department of Statistics at ITS consistently develops its programs to establish the Department as a center for education and research in the field of Statistics that is well-established and strong in research. Directed towards statistical theory and its applications in industry and business, it reflects the academic reputation and quality in realizing an ideal educational program at the ITS Department of Statistics. The Department of Statistics under the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) opened the Master's (S-2) Statistics Study Program starting in the 1999/2000 academic year. From the 1999/2000 academic year to the 2004/2005 academic year, it has graduated 80 alumni out of 302 students. Supported by 25 academic staff with qualifications: 2 Professors, 4 Doctors, and 19 Masters. The available supporting facilities are as follows: Classrooms, 2 Laboratories, a Reading Room with more than 900 library materials, 16 scientific journals, including Internet connection and other facilities.

Objectives

Education in the Master's Program in Statistics is aimed at providing learning experiences and their application toward academic expertise in Productivity and Quality Statistics as well as Business Problem Analysis and their substantial contribution to industry, services, and government. Meanwhile, the ultimate goal is to produce graduates who are capable of enhancing professional services, participating in the development of Statistics, being sensitive to various issues in society, and being able to formulate problem-solving approaches.

Academic Activities

The Statistics Master's (S-2) Study Program is conducted over 4 semesters (2 years), with a maximum study period of 4 years. The minimum credit load is 40 credits (sks), including a thesis according to the curriculum. The academic calendar for Semester I begins in early September, while Semester II begins in early February and ends in June. Academic activities include: lectures, laboratory practice, field practice, seminars, research, etc., conducted under the guidance of academic advisors. The Doctoral Program (S-3) in Statistics has a workload of 40 credits (sks) that must be completed within 6 semesters (3 years) according to the curriculum.

Supporting Facilities

In addition to the supporting facilities at the computer center and central library managed by ITS, a Reading Room, Statistics Laboratory, and Computation Laboratory are also available to support education in the Master's Program in Statistics at the ITS Department of Statistics. READING ROOM
  • In addition to various types of books (1,203 titles) and recent journals (48 journals) available in the ITS Statistics Reading Room, student research results (Final Projects/Theses) and ITS Statistics lecturer research are available as study materials for each student's learning development.
STATISTICS LABORATORY
  • This laboratory has activities related to Applied Statistics (such as: Quality Control Statistics, Reliability, Experimental Design, Nonparametric Regression, Sampling Techniques, etc.) supported by 100 Pentium IV processor-based computers connected to the Department of Statistics central computer network.
  • This laboratory is also supported by a dedicated room containing 10 multimedia Pentium IV-based computers interconnected as a computer network in the ITS Department of Statistics. Research activities related to stochastic simulation, Markov Chain Monte Carlo, and System Optimization are coordinated in this Laboratory.
COMPUTATION LABORATORY
  • This laboratory has activities related to the development of computational statistics. In this Laboratory, a SERVER computer is available that handles the entire computer network in the Department of Statistics. Inside this Laboratory, 100 Pentium IV-based computers and several computational software packages (such as: SPLUS, GPSS, QC Custom, STATGRAPHIC, EXECUSTAT, MINITAB, SAS, and SPSS) are available.
  • This laboratory is also supported by a dedicated room containing 10 multimedia Pentium IV-based computers interconnected as a computer network in the ITS Department of Statistics. Research activities related to stochastic simulation, Markov Chain Monte Carlo, and System Optimization are coordinated in this Laboratory.
