Begitu juga dengan<em> iron slag<\/em> (limbah baja, red) dan <em>copper slag<\/em> (limbah tembaga, red). Melalui pemikiran inovatif yang dipunya, Ir Tavio MS PhD&nbsp; mencoba berkreasi dengan memanfaatkan limbah buangan tersebut. Dengan penelitian yang dilakukan bersama mahasiswanya, Tavio berhasil memanfaatkan limbah tersebut untuk meningkatkan kualitas mutu beton. <\/p>\n<p><em>Fly ash, iron slag<\/em> dan <em>copper slag <\/em>dipilih karena material tersebut banyak mengandung <em>oksida silica<\/em>. <em>Oksida silica<\/em> adalah senyawa yang dapat bereaksi sebagai pelekat campuran beton. &quot;Kita memilih limbah tersebut karena setelah diteliti, banyak mengandung senyawa <em>oksida silica<\/em>. Rata-rata diatas 40 persen,&quot; jelas Tavio yang juga seorang dosen Teknik Sipil.<\/p>\n<p><em>Iron slag<\/em> digunakan sebagai substitusi untuk mengurangi penggunaan kerikil dan pasir. Disamping itu, <em>iron slag<\/em> dapat mengurangi penggunaan pasir sebesar 40 persen dan kerikil berkurang menjadi 50 persen. &quot;Dengan substitusi ini kita bisa menghasilkan beton dengan kekuatan 100 MPa dalam waktu 28 hari,&quot; jelas Wahyu Candra Prasetya, mahasiswa Teknik Sipil yang menyabet juara 2 dalam lomba beton di Universitas Kristen Petra.<\/p>\n<p>Penggunaan <em>iron slag <\/em>juga bisa menghemat biaya hingga 15 persen. Harga pembuatan beton per-meter kubik sebesar 774 ribu rupiah. Sedangkan, jika menggunakan material konvensional biaya yang dibutuhkan sebesar 896 ribu rupiah per-meter kubiknya. &quot;Itu untuk satu meter kubik, kalau misalnya untuk pembuatan gedung dan jembatan bentang panjang bisa sangat besar penghematannya,&quot; ungkap Wahyu.<\/p>\n<p>Sama seperti<em> iron slag, copper slag<\/em> juga menjadi material substitusi pasir. Campuran <em>copper slag <\/em>yang digunakan sebesar 30 persen dari total pasir dan tambahan<em> fly ash<\/em> sebesar 15 persen dapat menghasilkan kekuatan beton hingga 101 MPa dalam waktu 28 hari.<\/p>\n<p>Selain ramah lingkungan, keuntungan lain yang didapat dari pemanfaatan limbah tersebut adalah penghematan biaya produksi. Campuran <em>Iron slag<\/em> dan <em>fly ash<\/em> pada beton mampu mengurangi harga produksi sebesar 81 ribu rupiah dibanding pembuatan beton biasa. &quot;Penghematan ini akan menjadi daya tarik bagi masyarakat,&quot; jelas Tavio.<\/p>\n<p>Inovasi pembuatan beton dengan penggunaan limbah&nbsp; masih akan terus dikembangkan, terutama penelitian untuk mengetahui umur beton yang bisa dicapai. &quot;Kalau ditanya berapa lama beton tersebut akan bertahan, kita harus melakukan penelitian terlebih dahulu mengenai daya serapan beton terhadap air dan udara. Jika itu diketahui maka umur beton bisa diprediksi. Tapi untuk saat ini masih belum,&quot; Pungkas Tavio.
