Untuk mencegah dampaknya terhadap perubahan iklim, mikroalga digadang menjadi salah satu agen yang dapat menyerap karbon dioksida secara lebih efisien. Benarkan demikian?<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pakar Bioteknologi Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS), Prof Dr Ir Arief Widjaja M Eng menjelaskan, setiap tumbuhan sejatinya mampu menyerap karbon dioksida melalui proses fotosintesis. Namun, mikroalga dapat melakukan proses penyerapan zat racun ini dalam kurun waktu yang lebih cepat. \u201cKemampuan ini berkaitan dengan laju pertumbuhan mikroalga yang juga lebih cepat dibandingkan dengan tumbuhan biasa,\u201d terangnya.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mikroalga merupakan kelompok tumbuhan renik yang hidup di wilayah perairan tawar maupun laut. Apabila dibandingkan dengan tanaman yang butuh waktu berbulan-bulan, mikroalga dapat tumbuh dalam hitungan jam saja. Selama fotosintesis, karbon dioksida diubah menjadi glukosa sebagai sumber energi untuk mikroalga, sedangkan oksigen dilepaskan sebagai produk sampingan. Proses ini membantu mengurangi konsentrasi karbon dioksida dalam atmosfer dan menyokong keberlanjutan lingkungan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sayangnya, imbuh Arief, kemampuan mikroalga dalam menyerap karbon dioksida masih terbatas pada pH tertentu. Apabila tingkat keasaman emisi karbon terlalu rendah, mikroalga dapat mati karena <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">proses metabolisme dan fungsi selnya terganggu<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Untuk mengatasi kondisi ini, Arief tengah melakukan penelitian untuk memodifikasi ketahanan mikroalga terhadap pH rendah. \u201cDengan variabel kontrol mikroalga, cahaya, maupun intensitas karbondioksidanya,\u201d ujarnya.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dalam aplikasinya di skala yang lebih besar, skema pemanfaatan mikroalga dalam menyerap karbon dioksida dapat diadopsi di berbagai industri yang mengeluarkan emisi karbon\u00a0 tinggi. Menurut Arief, skema ini dapat dilakukan dengan menaruh kolam budidaya Alga di area keluaran emisi dari proses pengolahan pada industri. \u201cDengan itu, mikroalga dapat menyerap emisi sebelum emisi tersebut terbang ke area lain tanpa kontrol,\u201d paparnya.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Selain dapat menjadi salah satu penyokong reduksi emisi karbondioksida, Arief mengatakan, mikroalga dapat pula dimanfaatkan untuk menjadi bahan baku industri lain. Salah satunya adalah pemanfaatan mikroalga sebagai nutrisi seperti pada pembuatan spirulina. Selain itu, pati dari mikroalga dapat dimanfaatkan sebagai sumber gula dan pembuatan sorbitol.
