Prof Bieby Voijant Tangahu ST MT PhD ketika menyampaikan orasi ilmiahnya tentang teknologi remediasi untuk pemulihan tanah tercemar dalam pengukuhan sebagai Guru Besar\u00a0ke-195\u00a0ITS<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Kampus ITS, ITS News \u2013 <\/strong><\/span>Peningkatan aktivitas industri pertambangan menimbulkan risiko terjadinya pencemaran lingkungan. Mengatasi hal tersebut, Guru Besar ke-195<\/a> Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS)<\/a> Prof Bieby Voijant Tangahu ST MT PhD kembangkan teknologi remediasi lingkungan untuk memulihkan tanah tercemar akibat kegiatan penambangan tersebut.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Profesor dari Departemen Teknik Lingkungan<\/a> ini menjelaskan bahwa penelitiannya berangkat dari adanya pencemaran lingkungan akibat pertambangan minyak ilegal di daerah Wonocolo, Bojonegoro. Akibat kegiatan penambangan tersebut, lanjut Bieby, tanah di sekitar area pertambangan tercemar minyak mentah, senyawa petroleum hidrokarbon, serta senyawa Benzena, Toluena, Etilbenzena, dan Xilena (BTEX).<\/p>\n

Lebih jauh, perempuan asal Surabaya ini menuturkan bahwa senyawa-senyawa tersebut merupakan limbah Bahan Berbahaya dan Beracun (B3) yang dapat mengganggu kesehatan masyarakat setempat. \u201cOleh sebab itu, diperlukan teknologi remediasi untuk mengembalikan kondisi lahan seperti semula,\u201d tegasnya.<\/p>\n

Dalam penelitian untuk orasi ilmiah pengukuhannya sebagai profesor, Bieby memanfaatkan metode remediasi secara biologis yang dikombinasikan dengan metode fisik-kimia. Metode fisik-kimia memanfaatkan pengolahan soil washing yang berfungsi untuk memisahkan tanah dengan minyak mentah dan petroleum hidrokarbon. Sementara itu, metode biologis berfungsi untuk menurunkan konsentrasi bahan kimia yakni BTEX, nitrogen, kadmium, dan merkuri.<\/p>\n

Bieby menerangkan bahwa metode soil washing<\/em> efektif untuk mengurangi kandungan minyak dalam tanah dari 4 persen hingga kurang dari 1 persen. Lebih lanjut, metode remediasi biologis dengan bakteri Bacillus cereus, Nitrosomonas communis, dan Pseudomonas aeruginosa memiliki tingkat menurunkan kadar bahan kimia 40 persen hingga 70 persen.<\/p>\n

Pemilihan metode biologis dipilih karena lahan di Indonesia telah mengandung bakteri yang mampu memulihkan pencemaran secara alami. Bieby mengungkapkan, dengan penelitian ini maka diharapkan dapat mempercepat proses pemulihan tersebut. \u201cSelain itu, metode biologis cenderung lebih murah dan tidak menghasilkan limbah kimiawi,\u201d tutur ibu tiga anak tersebut.<\/p>\n

Meskipun penelitian ini masih dalam skala laboratorium, Bieby mengungkapkan bahwa pemulihan lingkungan tercemar dengan metode biologis telah memiliki efisiensi yang tinggi. \u201cNantinya, penelitian ini akan diproduksi massal untuk diaplikasikan secara langsung di berbagai lahan yang tercemar,\u201d beber dosen yang telah aktif mengajar sejak tahun 1997 ini.<\/p>\n

Melalui penelitian tersebut, sulung dari tiga bersaudara ini ingin terus mengembangkan teknologi remediasi lingkungan dengan memanfaatkan bakteri untuk membantu memulihkan pencemaran akibat kegiatan pertambangan. \u201cSaya berharap dengan keterbaharuan ilmu ini mampu membantu meningkatkan kualitas lingkungan,\u201d tutupnya optimistis.
