ITS Campus, ITS News \u2013<\/strong> In order to realize Presidential Regulation (Perpres) Number 40 of 2023 concerning the Acceleration of National Sugar Self-Sufficiency and the Provision of Bioethanol as Biofuel, Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS)<\/a> together with CV Agriutama inaugurated the Smart Mini Sorghum Sweetener Factory in Jombang. This modern factory is intended to support food security and maintain the availability of raw materials and auxiliary materials for national industry.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Head of the ITS Research Team, Fadlilatul Taufany ST PhD, explained that the factory inaugurated by ITS was different from other conventional factories. The difference is, this factory has a smart system which is based on the installation of a Distributed Control System (DCS) and Enterprise Resources Planning (ERP). “The implementation of these two systems is expected to increase effectiveness and efficiency in the work of the sugar factory,” he explained.<\/p>\n

More specifically, according to the lecturer who is often called Taufany, the development of ERP and DCS also reduces the risk of human error in factory operations, especially in the areas of accounting, procurement and recording company assets. Apart from human error, modern and practical factory processes can reduce human intervention which can cause a decrease in the quality of molasses (sugar).<\/p>\n

Apart from the modern factory system, continued Taufany, this factory also has the advantage of producing white and red crystal sugar which is made from sorghum. As is known, sorghum is a plant variety that has the advantage of being able to be harvested three times a year. “Seeing this opportunity, sorghum could be an alternative raw material for sugar factories besides sugar cane,” said the lecturer at the Department of Chemical Engineering.<\/p>\n

Seeing the great potential in sorghum, the ITS Director of Research and Community Service (DRPM) explained that in this research, he also succeeded in developing sorghum output products other than sugar. These products include sweet soy sauce, brown and white rice, vegan honey, and flour. “The hope is that this research will continue to be developed so that it can strengthen national food security,” he explained.<\/p>\n

With the existence of the Smart Mini Sorghum Sweetener Factory, Taufany hopes that sugar factories in Indonesia can return to existence and can also become an industry that is being looked at again by investors both nationally and internationally. He also thanked the support from the Indonesian Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology (Kemendikbudristek) and also the mission of CV Agriutama in advancing national food security. “Hopefully this research can be useful for the government in making the national food security program a success,” he said optimistically.
