Hingga sekarang, penentuan apakan seseorang positif malaria atau tidak masih didasarkan pada gejala klinis. Seperti, demam, menggigil, dan muntah-muntah.<\/p>\n<p>Secara fisik, hampir tidak ada perbedaan yang signifikan antara mikroskop pendeteksi malaria dengan mikroskop sederhana pada umumnya. Hanya saja, mikroskop hasil modifikasi ini memiliki piranti tambahan berupa lampu halogen berbentuk balok horizontal di bagian depannya. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Sinar dari lampu halogen ini yang berperan besar dalam diagnosis malaria,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d jelas Dr Tri Arif Sardjono ST MT, ketua tim penelitian.<\/p>\n<p>Sumber cahaya itu sendiri dapat diubah-ubah intensitasnya dengan Pulse With Modulation (PWM). Tak hanya itu, lampu halogen juga bisa difilter dengan panjang gelombang tertentu. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153<em>Filter<\/em> yang digunakan adalah <em>filter<\/em> warna sebanyak dua jenis,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d lanjut dosen Teknik Elektro tersebut.<\/p>\n<p>Prinsip kerja mikroskop ini juga tak jauh beda. Saat darah telah ditetesi zat Acridine Orange (AO) dan disorot dengan sinar lampu halogen 100 watt, maka zat akan memendarkan plasmodium malaria. Hasilnya berupa latar belakang gelap, inti berwarna kehijauan dan sitoplasma (bagian berwujud cairan kental di sekitar inti sel) berwarna orange bagi penderita positif malaria.<\/p>\n<p>Tak kalah dengan mikroskop digital, mikroskop modifikasi ini dapat mengidentifikasi dengan cepat dan akurat. Hanya dibutuhkan waktu sekitar tiga atau empat menit. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Mikroskop ini murah dibanding mikroskop digital. Modal awalnya hanya mikroskop biasa,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d tutur Sardjono yang kini juga membuat Electro Laring untuk pita suara bagi penderita yang sulit berbicara.<\/p>\n<p>Kelebihan lain dari mikroskop ini adalah kemudahannya digunakan. Alat ini bisa menggunakan listrik maupun baterai. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Tak hanya rumah sakit, alat ini juga mudah diaplikasikan di daerah terpencil,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d ungkapnya. Ia menambahkan bahwa alat ini memberi kemudahan bagi petugas kesehatan sebab bisa langsung dibawa untuk pemeriksaan di lapangan.<\/p>\n<p>Alat temuan yang masih prototipe ini benar-benar aplikatif.&nbsp; Setelah selesai dikembangkan pada September 2009 lalu, mikroskop pendeteksi malaria ini telah diujicobakan ke beberapa daerah di Indonesia Timur. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Kami akan terus mengembangkan mikroskop ini. Rencananya, sebuah kamera akan ditambahkan sehingga hasil pendaran bisa dihitung manual,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d jelas Sardjono yang juga berharap dapat menambahkan pengontrolan panas pada mikroskop tersebut.<\/p>\n<p>Dalam mengembangkan alat ini, Sardjono tidak sendirian. Ia dibantu salah seorang mahasiswa angkatan 2005. Saat ini hak paten mikroskop tersebut masih diproses. Pendekatan informal telah dilaksanakan&nbsp; pada perusahaan instrumen biomedis nasional dan Departemen Kesehatan.
