Pemanfaatan ini dibahas lebih lanjut oleh profesor asal National Taiwan University, Prof Hsing-Cheng Hsi PhD, dalam kuliah tamu Departemen Teknik Lingkungan Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) yang bertajuk <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Recent Air Issues in Air Pollution and Control Technologies.<\/span><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hsi mengungkapkan, karbon aktif dipilih karena memiliki kemampuan adsorpsi atau penyerapan partikel yang sangat baik, termasuk partikel VOC. Partikel yang diserap nantinya akan tertahan ke dalam pori-pori karbon. \u201cPori-pori karbon yang sangat luas ini mampu menyaring dan menahan partikel dalam berbagai ukuran, mulai dari yang kecil hingga besar,\u201d terangnya.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Lebih lanjut Hsi menambahkan, ada tiga hal yang harus diperhatikan dalam pembuatan karbon aktif\u00a0 agar bisa digunakan dengan maksimal sesuai fungsinya. Tiga hal tersebut diuraikan Hsi yaitu meningkatkan kapasitas dan kinetik adsorpsi, meningkatkan daya pelepasan partikel oleh karbon (desorpsi), dan mengembalikan fungsi karbon secara efektif serta efisien.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Selain itu, ia juga menyebutkan bahwa peningkatan kapasitas adsorpsi karbon bisa dilakukan dengan cara menciptakan karbon berpermukaan luas. Sedangkan kinetik adsorpsi yang baik, menurutnya bisa didapat melalui upaya pengaturan ukuran karbon dan pori-porinya secara keseluruhan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pria berkacamata ini menambahkan bahwa kapasitas dan kinetik adsorpsi yang baik harus disertai dengan daya desorpsi yang baik pula. Sebab, jika daya desorpsi berhasil melepaskan VOC dari karbon dengan sangat baik, maka karbon bisa digunakan kembali pada keadaan yang baik serta pori-pori yang kosong.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Kemudian, ia memaparkan beberapa teknik yang dapat dilakukan untuk mendukung daya desorpsi karbon, seperti <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">steam regeneration<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">electrothermal swing system<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, dan <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">microwave swing adsorption. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cPemilihan teknik yang tepat dan efektif akan mempengaruhi kembalinya fungsi karbon seperti semula,\u201d terangnya.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Di akhir materi, Hsi menyatakan bahwa berbagai upaya untuk mengurangi VOC melalui teknologi terkini harus terus diteliti dan diterapkan.
