Melihat permasalahan tersebut, Guru Besar (Gubes) Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) Prof Setiyo Gunawan ST PhD yang telah dikukuhkan, Rabu (31\/3), tergerak mengembangkan alternatif teknologi <em>Batch-wise Solvent Extraction<\/em> untuk pemanfaatan minyak dari biji nyamplung (mangrove) guna menyokong kelestarian dan memaksimalkan kebermanfaatan dari mangrove.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Nyamplung sendiri yang termasuk ke dalam jenis tanaman mangrove associate ditanam di Indonesia sebagai penahan gelombang pasang. Ditambah lagi, setiap bagian dari nyamplung memiliki berbagai manfaat seperti halnya minyak biji nyamplung yang berguna sebagai bahan bakar ataupun sebagai obat dalam meredakan alergi tertentu.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Dosen yang biasa disapa Gunawan tersebut berujar, selama ini belum ada penelitian yang berkaitan dengan pemurnian minyak nyamplung. \u201cPadahal (minyak nyamplung) dapat dimanfaatkan menjadi produk yang bernilai tinggi untuk kebutuhan manusia baik pangan maupun nonpangan,\u201d tuturnya.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Menurut Gunawan, dalam pemurnian minyak nyamplung menjadi sumber minyak pangan perlu diperhatikan pemilihan metode yang tepat. Proses tersebut, ungkap Gunawan, di sebagian besar industri minyak nabati menggunakan karbon aktif yang berasal dari tulang hewan karena harganya murah. \u201cNamun, hal ini akan menjadi bahaya bila digunakan tulang hewan seperti babi karena tidak memenuhi persyaratan keamanan secara religius bagi umat muslim,\u201d terang Kepala <a href=\"https:\/\/www.its.ac.id\/drpm\/beranda\/pusat\/pusat-kajian\/pusat-kajian-halal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pusat Kajian Halal (PKH) ITS<\/a> tersebut.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Masih tentang tahapan proses pemurnian yang ada saat ini, terdapat kandungan senyawa berbahaya 3-Monochloropropane-1,2-diol (MCPD) Ester dalam minyak goreng yang dihasilkan. Metode ini telah terbukti lebih aman dan sederhana karena menggantikan fungsi dan tahapan <em>degumming<\/em>, <em>neutralization<\/em> dan <em>bleaching<\/em> pada metode yang ada saat ini. Tak hanya itu, beban proses deodorisasi lebih ringan karena menggunakan suhu yang lebih rendah untuk operasinya.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Dalam metode tersebut, konsep perbedaan polaritas digunakan sebagai dasar pemurnian minyak goreng ketika senyawa nonpolar akan larut dalam pelarut nonpolar dan sebaliknya. Secara garis besar, kandungan senyawa triasilgliserol (TAG) yang ada pada minyak goreng membuatnya dapat larut pada pelarut heksana dan akan berkumpul dalam <em>nonpolar liquid fraction<\/em> (NPLF) yang mewakili 74,1 persen minyak mentah nyamplung. \u201cBarulah selanjutnya dapat digunakan sebagai bahan baku produksi biodiesel atau <em>deodorizer<\/em> dalam produksi minyak goreng,\u201d ujar pengampu Laboratorium Teknologi Biokimia ini.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Sementara itu, menurut Gunawan, senyawa <em>free fatty acid<\/em> (FFA) dan kandungan pengotor lainnya akan larut dalam pelarut metanol dan berkumpul pada <em>polar liquid fraction<\/em> (PLF), sehingga selanjutnya dapat digunakan di industri kosmetik maupun farmasi. Sesuai dengan kaidah fiqih, apabila ada dua hal mudharat yang tidak bisa kita hindari semuanya, maka yang kita lakukan adalah memilih mudharat yang lebih ringan. \u201cDi mana produksi minyak nyamplung secara ekonomi adalah sebesar 7-12 ton hektar per tahun lebih tinggi dibandingkan minyak sawit yang hanya lima ton per tahun,\u201d papar Gunawan.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Dengan demikian, menimbang keunggulannya, gagasan pemanfaatan minyak nyamplung yang disampaikan oleh dosen kelahiran tahun 1976 ini pun dapat mendorong ekonomi hijau yang cocok mendukung program Presiden Joko Widodo (Jokowi). Hal ini dikarenakan tanaman nyamplung memiliki ketahanan yang tinggi terhadap kondisi yang ekstrem, seperti angin kencang, air payau, dan kekeringan.
