Guna menghemat energi dan bahan bakarnya, sudah banyak kendaraan yang mengadopsi teknologi hybrid. Guru Besar ITS yang akan segera dikukuhkan, Rabu (31\/3), Prof Ir Aguk Zuhdi Muhammad Fathallah MEng PhD, dalam orasinya menyoroti bagaimana teknologi hybrid bisa mencapai potensi maksimal jika dikombinasikan dengan <em>free piston linear engine<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Dosen yang kerap disapa Aguk ini menjelaskan, konsep dari <em>free piston linear engine<\/em> adalah untuk mengurangi kerugian mekanik yang diatasi dengan menghilangkan gerakan putar atau rotasi. Pada <em>combustion engine<\/em> yang konvensional, gerak piston masih didorong melalui perputaran poros engkol.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Sedangkan pada <em>free piston linear engine<\/em>, geraknya akan lurus dan terfokus pada siklus balik. \u201dKarena tidak ada gerak berputar ini, maka <em>output<\/em> energi listriknya akan lebih besar,\u201d terang dosen Departemen Teknik Sistem Perkapalan ini.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><em>Free piston linear engine<\/em> dibagi menjadi tiga, pertama yaitu <em>single piston<\/em> yang memiliki satu ruang bakar dan satu piston. Pada <em>single piston<\/em> perlu merancang kerja balik pada siklus berikutnya. Selanjutnya <em>dual piston<\/em>, yang didesain dengan ruang bakar berlawanan arah. \u201dBerlawanan arah ini sehingga bisa saling memberikan siklus balik,\u201d ujarnya.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Kemudian yang terakhir dan yang paling sering digunakan sekarang yaitu <em>opposed piston<\/em>. Kebalikan dengan <em>dual piston<\/em>, ada dua piston yang saling berlawanan tetapi hanya ada satu ruang bakar tanpa ada kepala silindernya. Piston akan menghasilkan gas buang, yang nantinya akan menggerakan turbin dan menghasilkan energi.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><em>Free piston linear engine<\/em> ini, lanjut Aguk, cocok digunakan pada mesin yang tidak memerlukan energi putar seperti pada penggerak kompresor, generator listrik, dan kendaraan hybrid. Sekarang, teknologi hybrid sudah banyak diadopsi oleh kendaraan darat. Mesin akan mengisi baterai jika bahan bakar tidak dimanfaatkan, seperti saat macet. \u201dKemudian saat baterai penuh, energi akan diambil dari baterainya,\u201d papar lelaki kelahiran 19 Mei 1956 ini.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Selain transportasi darat, transportasi laut pun sudah kerap menggunakan teknologi hybrid dengan <em>electric propulsion system. <\/em>Dengan sistem ini, menurut peraturan IMO Annex VI akan lebih menguntungkan dari sisi propulsi, polusi udara, dan hemat bahan bakar karena semuanya akan lebih bisa dikendalikan mengingat kapal juga memerlukan tenaga listrik untuk sistem-sistem di atas kapal.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Dibandingkan menggunakan satu generator besar untuk menggerakan propeler, dengan teknologi hybrid akan disediakan beberapa generator yang hanya akan dinyalakan sesuai kebutuhan. Generator juga akan berguna untuk mengisi baterai, yang mana nanti keduanya akan menyalakan sistem di atas kapal. \u201dDengan teknologi hybrid, kapal tidak akan mengandalkan baterai atau generator saja,\u201d jelas dosen asal Magetan ini.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Lulusan S1 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.its.ac.id\/tmesin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Teknik Mesin ITS<\/a> ini pun telah melakukan riset terkait <em>free piston linear engine<\/em> sejak tahun 2007. Risetnya diawali dengan mengamati <em>free piston linear engine<\/em> dengan <em>single piston<\/em> yang masih penggeraknya menggunakan <em>spring<\/em> (pegas). Saat mesin diamati lewat aplikasi dengan kecepatan 60 radius per menit (rpm), ditemukan bahwa terdapat momentum <em>angular <\/em>(momentum sudut) pada piston akibat gesekan antara piston dengan dinding silinder.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201dMomentum <em>angular<\/em> akan menyebabkan piston berputar, dan akan sangat mengganggu proses pembilasan (<em>scavenging<\/em>) pada mesin dua langkah. Pada <em>semi free piston linear engine<\/em> ini, piston diberikan pasak pada porosnya untuk menghilangkan momentum angular yang akan menyebabkan piston berputar.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Desain yang dikembangkan oleh alumni S3 Teknik Mesin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ump.edu.my\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Universiti Malaysia Pahang<\/a> ini pun menggunakan sistem <em>dual piston<\/em> dan <em>two stroke<\/em>. Dalam hal ini, piston akan bergerak secara linear ke kanan dan kiri akibat terjadi pembakaran di satu sisi.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Berdasarkan riset yang telah dilakukannya ini, dengan bahan bakar yang sama <em>output<\/em> energi yang dihasilkan <em>semi free piston linear engine<\/em> bisa meningkat hingga 24 persen dibandingkan mesin konvensional.
