Salah satu aplikasinya adalah kemagnetan lingkungan. Hal ini dibahas lebih lanjut dalam Kuliah Tamu yang diadakan oleh Departemen Teknik Geofisika Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) dengan topik \u201cKemagnetan Lingkungan\u201d pada Senin, (22\/3) lalu.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Dosen Departemen Fisika Universitas Negeri Malang, Siti Zulaikah Dr Spd MSi menjelaskan bahwa kemagnetan batuan sendiri adalah suatu kajian yang fokus untuk mempelajari sifat magnetik yang ada di alam, utamanya yang ada di lapisan batuan. Sedangkan kemagnetan lingkungan, lebih berkaitan dengan pengaruh iklim, transportasi sedimen, polusi, dan pengaruh lingkungan lain pada mineral magnet.<\/p>\n<p>Kajian perbedaan dari sifat magnetik pada suatu area dapat dijadikan sebagai indikator perubahan lingkungan. Selain itu, sifat magnetik ini bisa juga digunakan sebagai <i>proxy data<\/i> atau data tidak langsung. \u201cMaksudnya, sifat ini dapat dikombinasikan dengan data lain ketika mempelajari suatu kejadian sehingga dapat diketahui perubahan kondisi lingkungan yang dikaji,\u201d ujarnya.<\/p>\n<p>Pengembangan kemagnetan batuan dalam geofisika baru akhir-akhir ini dilakukan. Apakah limbah tersebut bersifat <i>magnetik<\/i> atau <i>non magnetik<\/i>. Ketika karakteristik limbah tersebut bersifat <i>magnetik<\/i>, maka kita harus mengkaji lagi untuk mengetahui limbah tersebut. \u201cApakah termasuk <i>litogenik<\/i> yang langsung berasal dari alam\u00a0 atau <i>antropogenik<\/i> yang berasal dari manusia),\u201d paparnya.<\/p>\n<p>Kajian dan penelitian geofisika dengan mengaplikasikan kemagnetan lingkungan sudah sangat sering dilakukan. Contohnya adalah penelitian pencemaran limbah pada proses pengolahan emas, pencemaran tanah karena limbah tambang minyak bumi di Bojonegoro, dan pendeteksian sensitivitas respons magnetik pada sumber polusi yang berbeda di China.<\/p>\n<p>Pada geotermal, suhu dalam sistem geotermal bisa terekam dalam mineral magnetik. Selain itu, sifat magnetik ini bisa juga digunakan untuk melacak pelapukan pada batuan. \u201cJadi, kita bisa mengetahui apakah batuan mengalami pelapukan atau tidak dan bagaimana tingkat pelapukannya,\u201d tegasnya.<\/p>\n<p>Untuk kedepannya, diharapkan penelitian yang terkait dengan hal ini akan lebih banyak lagi. Mengingat potensi pengembangan kemagnetan lingkungan di Indonesia sendiri sangat besar. Hal ini dikarenakan tersedianya objek yang melimpah.
