Salah satunya adalah semakin berkurangnya  persediaan minyak, sehingga diperlukan bahan bakar lain. Salah satu bahan bakar yang berpotensi besar adalah energi panas bumi dimana Indonesia memiliki banyak titik yang berpotensi untuk dijadikan pembangkit listrik.<\/p>\n<p>Meski memiliki potensi yang cukup besar, namun Indonesia belum memanfaatkannya dengan maksimal. \u201dSaat ini pemanfaatannya hanya sebesar 800 Mega Watt. Untuk kedepannya ditargetkan kapasitas ini  agar bisa naik menjadi 2700 Mega Watt,\u201d ungkapnya. Ginting mencotohkan pemanfaatan panas bumi yang sudah dilakukan, salah satunya di Derajat, Jawa Barat.<\/p>\n<p>Pendorong utama pentingnya pemanfaatan energi panas bumi ini adalah kondisi semakin menipisnya cadangan minyak bumi. Bahkan menurut Ginting, negara-negara di Eropa sudah melakukan banyak investasi dan penelitian untuk mengembangkan energi ini.<\/p>\n<p>Menjawab pertanyaan salah satu peserta, Ginting menegaskan bahwa energi panas bumi adalah energi yang terbaharui (<em>renewable<\/em>). Yakni bila aliran gas yang dikeluarkan sumur, dapat di-injeksikan kembali. \u201dPanas bumi ini <em>renewable<\/em>, tentunya bila di-<em>manage<\/em> dengan baik,\u201d terangnya. <\/p>\n<p>Perkembangan industri dan pengolahan panas bumi sendiri sudah menunjukkan hasil. \u201dDi tahun 2010 nanti kita akan menjadi tuan rumah World Geothermal Congres ke-empat, \u201d papar Ginting tentang salah satu pencapaian Indonesia di bidang panas bumi.<\/p>\n<p>Untuk pengembangan energi tersebut menurut Ginting, juga diperlukan sumber daya manusia yang berkualitas. \u201dTanpa SDM tidak mungkin pengembangan bisa dilakukan. Disini lah peranan perguruan tinggi diperlukan,\u201d terangnya.<\/p>\n<p>Selain membagi pengetahuan tentang pengolahan panas bumi di Indonesia, <em>general lecture<\/em> ini juga memberikan gambaran tentang dunia kerja di perusahaan energi. Puluhan peserta <em>general lecture<\/em> ini juga bersemangat menanyakan tentang situsai kerja, kemampuan yang harus dimiliki hingga kisaran gaji di industri energi ini.<\/p>\n<p>Sebelum Alimin Ginting, <em>general lecture <\/em>ini juga menghadirkan pembicara lain, antara lain adalah dosen Geofisika Dr Ir Widya Utama DEA dan David Newel, praktisi dari Chevron. Dan setelah seminar, diadakan diskusi panel dan workshop di Gedung Perpustakaan ITS.
