Menindaklanjuti kondisi tersebut, Tim Pengabdian Masyarakat (Abmas) Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) mengaplikasikan proses reverse-osmosis membrane sebagai metode penjernihan air untuk kebutuhan air minum.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Tim Abmas yang berada di bawah arahan Prof Dr Fahimah Martak MSi ini mengawali penelitian dengan mencari metode yang cocok untuk pengolahan air minum. Dalam program ini, pengujian kualitas air sumur menjadi hal yang utama. \u201cSelain itu, sampel air untuk pengujian juga berasal dari air kolam Departemen Kimia ITS serta air PDAM yang mengandung kontaminan seperti bakteri E. Untuk itu, metode tersebut dibuat dalam sebuah rangkaian alat dengan spesifikasi seperti pengolahan air minum pada umumnya sesuai arahan Badan Pengkajian dan Penerapan Teknologi (BPPT).<\/p>\n<p>Rangkaian alat tersebut terdiri dari pemisahan melalui lima rangkaian penyaring (filter) untuk menyaring logam berat, partikel-partikel berukuran mikro, serta menghilangkan bau. Hal ini dilakukan dalam upaya pemenuhan kemandirian air minum dan peningkatan ekonomi masyarakat setempat. Untuk itu, sosialisasi mengenai penjernihan air dan cara pengoperasian alat juga diberikan kepada para santri dan pengurus ponpes.<\/p>\n<p>Fahimah mengungkapkan bahwa alat yang telah berhasil dipasang tersebut memiliki sumber air yang langsung terhubung dengan keran air masjid yang bersumber dari air sumur. Ketika keran air dihidupkan, maka air dapat langsung melewati proses pengolahan tanpa perlu ditampung dalam tandon. \u201cHal ini merupakan langkah efisien untuk pengolahan air minum, sehingga penghuni ponpes dapat langsung meminum air hasil olahannya,\u201d terang ibu satu anak ini.<\/p>\n<p>Di balik keberhasilan pengujian, Tim Abmas ITS ini juga telah melalui sejumlah tantangan karena memerlukan waktu sedikit lebih lama dari perkiraan merujuk pada kondisi air yang akan diolah. Begitupun dengan masyarakat wilayah setempat, karena alat penjernihan tersebut diletakkan di masjid sehingga dapat dimanfaatkan semua pihak.<\/p>\n<p>Fahimah pun menilai bahwa terdapat peluang bagi ponpes untuk memproduksi air kemasan dari hasil pengolahan air tersebut melalui pengembangan lebih lanjut.
