Didorong keyakinan tersebut, dosen Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) Prof Dr Ir Soeprijanto MSc, berhasil membuat sebuah penelitian untuk pemanfaatan limbah organik menjadi biogas dan bioetanol.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Kisahnya bermula saat ia melihat limbah makanan, buah, dan sayuran yang berada di pasar. Dosen Departemen Teknik Kimia Industri ini akhirnya melakukan penelitian biogas dari limbah-limbah yang dianggap kebanyakan orang sudah tak berarti dan memiliki nilai ekonomi yang kecil. \u201cSaya yakin limbah kalau diolah bisa jadi lebih berguna, misalnya dijadikan bahan bakar dan juga pupuk organik,\u201d ungkapnya.<\/p>\n<p>Melalui salah satu penelitiannya yang berjudul Pengembangan Prototype Bioreaktor Anaerobik untuk Biogas melalui Proses Co-Digestion Limbah Buah dan Sayuran Pasar, ia pun mengambil fokus ke limbah buah dan sayuran. \u201cSaya menggunakan sampel kulit pisang dan bahan sisa yang memiliki kandungan selulosa, hemiselulosa serta lignin,\u201d tambahnya.<\/p>\n<p>Setelah melalui proses grinding, semua limbah buah dan sayuran kemudian diumpankan ke dalam digester anaerobic. Sehingga dengan melalui proses fermentasi akan dihasilkan produk biogas. Sedangkan hasil samping dari proses fermentasi tersebut berupa padatan dan cairan, yang bisa digunakan sebagai pupuk organik. \u201cApabila melihat residu pertanian yang tidak berguna, ada keinginan saya untuk menjadikannya sesuatu yang berguna,\u201d imbuhnya.<\/p>\n<p>Soeprijanto mengatakan, inspirasi penelitiannya ini diperoleh dari pengembangan ilmu yang sudah ia pelajari saat studi S-2 (master) di Gent, Belgia dan S-3 (doktoral) di Glasgow, Skotlandia. Selain biogas, ia juga melakukan penelitian pembuatan bioetanol yang berasal dari sorgum, batang dan tongkol jagung. Bahkan juga mengolah limbah singkong dari industri tepung tapioka melalui proses hidrolisis enzim dan fermentasi.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSaya berharap setelah (penelitian) ini, juga dapat mengembangkan bahan bakar biobutanol dari biomassa dan biogasoline dari limbah minyak goreng,\u201d pungkasnya.
