Inilah salah satu hal yang mendasari mahasiswa doktoral Departemen Teknik Kimia Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS), Ummu Kalsum, mengangkat judul penelitian Pengembangan Pembuatan Biodiesel dari Mikroalga dengan bantuan Microwave secara In Situ sebagai disertasinya.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Lewat penelitian ini, Ummu Kalsum pun dinyatakan lulus menyandang gelar doktor dalam Sidang Terbuka Promosi Doktor yang digelar Jumat (16\/8). Selanjutnya, perempuan kelahiran 1969 ini memaparkan bahwa mikroalga tersebut memasuki proses transesterifikasi menggunakan katalis homogen, yaitu KOH dan H2SO4, serta katalis heterogen, yaitu ZnO dan ZSM-5.<\/p>\n<p>Ummu menjelaskan bahwa penggunaan katalis tersebut ditentukan oleh lipid yang dihasilkan mikroalga dalam proses ekstraksi. Menurutnya, penggunaan gelombang mikro menyebabkan waktu reaksi yang diperlukan untuk menghasilkan biodiesel lebih cepat. \u201cSelain itu, kandungan produk yang dihasilkan dari reaksi menggunakan gelombang mikro lebih banyak daripada menggunakan pemanasan konvensional,\u201d ungkapnya.<\/p>\n<p>Mengenai prospek penggunaan mikroalga sebagai penghasil biodiesel di Indonesia, perempuan berkerudung ini menilai Indonesia memiliki prospek yang besar. Pasalnya, Ummu menerangkan bahwa Indonesia merupakan negara tropis yang mendapatkan paparan melimpah dari sinar matahari. Sinar matahari itu sendiri merupakan komponen penting dalam fotosintesis mikroalga.<\/p>\n<p>Tidak hanya itu, ibu dari tiga anak ini menambahkan bahwa mikroalga merupakan bahan baku generasi ketiga yang tidak bersaing dengan fungsinya sebagai bahan makanan. Dalam pembudidayaannya, mikroalga juga tidak membutuhkan banyak lahan. Inilah yang menurut Ummu menjadi nilai tambah mikroalga dibandingkan bahan baku biodiesel lainnya.<\/p>\n<p>Meskipun demikian, Ummu mengaku belum merasa puas dengan hasil penelitiannya. Menurutnya, masih diperlukan penelitian lebih lanjut terutama dalam proses pemurnian biodiesel yang dihasilkannya. Ia pun tidak menutup fakta bahwa biodiesel yang dihasilkannya belum memenuhi Standar Nasional Indonesia (SNI) untuk biodiesel.
