Mereka berhasil memanfaatkan limbah cangkang kerang, sebagai pengganti agregat beton. Beton berbahan limbah ini disinyalir memiliki bobot yang ringan dan bermutu tinggi.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Ketiganya adalah Aldith Firman Akbar, Helmy Ramadhani Chrisatama Sakti, dan Alifiah Devayanti yang tergabung dalam tim bernama CT Askari. Sejak awal, tiga mahasiswa itu berupaya untuk menggunkan limbah cangkang kerang yang ada di pesisir Pantai Kenjeran sebagai pengganti agregat kasar atau yang akrab disebut kerikil, pada beton. Kemudian, cangkang kerang tersebut difungsikan 100 persen sebagai pengganti agregat kasar.<\/p>\n<p>Pilihannya pada cangkang kerang bukanlah tanpa pertimbangan. Menurut Aldith, cangkang kerang pada era saat ini hanya digunakan sebagai hiasan ataupun cinderamata. Nyatanya jika dilihat dengan teliti, cangkang kerang memiliki tekstur yang sama kasarnya dengan kerikil atau batu pecah. \u201cOleh karena itu, dengan limbah cangkang kerang yang melimpah di daerah pesisir, sayang jika hanya dijadikan hiasan maupun cindera mata,\u201d ujarnya.<\/p>\n<p>Di sisi lain, tim CT Askari itu juga menggunakan limbah pembakaran batu bara di PLTU Paiton sbagai pengganti semen. Selanjutnya, limbah pembakaran batu bara atau yang biasa dikenal sebagai <em>fly ash <\/em>ini dapat mengurangi penggunaan semen yang memiliki harga jual relatif tinggi. Adapun proses <em>mixing <\/em>dilakukan tim CT Askari sesuai dengan cara pembuatan beton pada umumnya. Kemudian, agregat kasar beton digantikan dengan limbah cangkang kerang yang sebelumnya sudah dicuci bersih untuk menghilangkan debu dan kotoran yang menempel.\u00a0 \u201cTentu saja sebelumnya kami telah melakukan uji material cangkang kerang tersebut,\u201d jelasnya.<\/p>\n<p>Lebih lanjut, Aldith menjelaskan bahwa hasil uji kuat tekan beton ini sesuai dengan yang diharapkan. Dari target mutu beton 20 Mpa, pengetesan berhenti pada angka 17,8 Mpa. \u201cMenurut kami itu sudah pencapaian yang luar biasa karena hanya berbeda 2,2 Mpa dari target,\u201d paparnya. Beton ringan bermutu tinggi ini pun telah menyabet juara ketiga pada perlombaan yang diadakan oleh Institut Teknologi Nasional (ITN) Malang beberapa waktu lalu.
