Berkaca hal tersebut, Dr Drs Mahmudi MSi dalam disertasinya meneliti nanopartikel mangan dioksida (MnO2) sebagai katalis menggunakan metode elektrolisis, untuk pembuatan baterai sebagai energi alternatif di masa depan.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Dalam presentasinya di Sidang Terbuka Promosi Doktor di Departemen Teknik Kimia Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS), Rabu (20\/2), Mahmudi yang meneliti bersama promotornya Prof Dr Ir Heru Setyawan MEng menjelaskan bahwa mangan tersebut dielektrolisis menjadi katalis. Yang selanjutnya katalis tersebut bisa digunakan untuk mereduksi oksigen menjadi air.<\/p>\n<p>Menurut Prof Heru, ide menciptakan alternatif energi ini didasari oleh fenomena penipisan energi konvensional dunia dan kurangnya akses energi di daerah pelosok Indonesia. Keresahan ini menginspirasinya untuk dapat menciptakan baterai dengan bahan katalis yang mudah ditemukan di Indonesia, namun murah secara ekonomis. \u201cSebelumnya sudah ada inovasi katalis dengan bahan aktif platina, namun harganya yang mahal sehingga harus mencari bahan aktif lainnya,\u201d papar Wakil Rektor I ITS Bidang Akademik dan Kemahasiswaan ini.<\/p>\n<p>Ide tersebut kemudian dibawa oleh Mahmudi yang juga dosen di Universitas Negeri Malang (UM) untuk diteliti lebih lanjut. Dengan judul disertasi Sintesis Nanopartikel MnO2 dengan Metode Elektrolisis dan Aplikasinya, ternyata penelitian ini tidaklah sebentar. Selama kurang lebih 13 semester studi doktoralnya, Mahmudi terus mengalami trial and error. \u201cMasa penelitian yang cukup panjang ini disebabkan karena katalis yang dihasilkan belum maksimal,\u201d ungkap pria kelahiran Jombang, 20 April 1959 ini.<\/p>\n<p>Variabel yang disoroti oleh Mahmudi untuk menghasilkan katalis yang efektif dan efisien adalah derajat keasamannya (pH). Dengan menggunakan pH 0,2 baterai ini dihasilkan energi yang cukup besar dalam waktu yang singkat. \u201cSebelum itu saya juga pernah menguji dengan pH 0,175 dan proses sintesis memerlukan waktu lebih satu hari, dan ketika menggunakan pH 0,2 hanya memerlukan waktu 15 menit untuk menghasilkan jumlah energi yang sama,\u201d ujarnya.<\/p>\n<p>Mahmudi menuturkan bahwa untuk mendapatkan angka pH 0,2 juga tidaklah mudah. Dalam perjalanannya, Mahmudi mencoba menggunakan berbagai nominal angka dan mengalami trial-and-error. Walaupun hasil yang didapat sudah memuaskan, Mahmudi mengatakan bahwa penelitian ini akan terus dilanjutkan untuk lebih memaksimalkan kualitas katalis yang dihasilkan.
